Edutopia's 52 Ways to Check for Understanding
Ownership is a key component of gifted education. Using alternative formative assessments can be a great way to check for understanding and move away from traditional summative assessments or written tests and quizzes! You can use this list of alternative assessments to verify that your students have learned while also increasing ownership in your classroom. Check out the list below for 52 alternative ways to check for understanding in the classroom.
Highlighting Mistakes-A Grading and Feedback Strategy
Hattie's research has shown us that using descriptive feedback in your classroom influences student achievement and learning. When working with gifted students or high-achieving students, you can maximize their potential through descriptive feedback. Consider the strategy shown in the video below for one way to provide descriptive feedback in the classroom on tests. By highlighting mistakes, this teacher is able to show her students her "favorite mistakes" and encourages students to take a closer look at their learning. In this video, instead of redoing their work, the students in the video are re-learning the concepts and correcting any misconceptions in their thinking and learning.

Accelerated Visual Art Program
Recently Mansfield City Schools and the Mansfield Art Center have formed a partnership to bring an Accelerated Arts Program to intermediate and middle school students. Students who are identified as gifted in visual arts and students who were in the process of being identified as gifted in visual arts were invited to participate in the program. The program offers students art lessons in areas such as sculpting, sketching, string art, painting, and more! See student work below and stay tuned for more student work to be shared!
If you know a student who may be gifted in visual or performing arts, please nominate the student using the button below! Send the completed nomination form to Leah Barger (barger.leah@moesc.net) or Veronica Williams Payne (payne.veronica@mansfieldschools.org).

Intermediate students learned how to make 2-D sculptures to create a Bas Relief.
Students also worked with glass blowing techniques!
Fostering a Growth Mindset with Young Learners
Gifted students often enjoy learning about their brain and how their brain learns and grows. Growth mindset is important for gifted learners who sometimes struggle to embrace challenges or who get frustrated when they don't understand something perfectly the first time. Connecting learning to brain growth makes learning more relevant to gifted students. Check out Shannon Anderson's books (and video below) for young students about growth mindset and resilience.
