News from Carl Sandburg Junior High
August 2, 2022
A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
I had originally crafted this newsletter as an exciting "Welcome Back" message as the start of a new year is right around the corner. As I am now sending this message, I am grieving the loss of six members of our D15 community...two of them being precious members of our Wildcat family. My heart aches for our students and staff.
Mrs. Byrne and I can assure you that the well-being and safety of our staff and students is our highest priority and urge you to reach out if there is anything we can do to support you and your child. On Monday, you received information about opportunities for your child to speak with clinician staff in a private setting- in-person or virtual. Simply use this link to schedule an appointment: https://go.oncehub.com/CCSD15Support .
In addition, a Caregiver Support training will be available and held tonight, August 2nd, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm at Central Road School for both staff and parents. This training will be held in person with a virtual attendance option also available. Access the virtual attendance session through this link. Children are welcome to attend with their parents.
If you are having trouble finding an available time, please reach out to me and I'll connect with you with the appropriate support.
We are here for you and your children,
Erika Johansen
Sandburg Principal
Welcome Back Details
School supply lists can be located at this SITE. We recommend that students just come to school on Day #1 with their Chromebook, notebook, and a writing utensil. We'll help them get acclimated and help them prepare for what they will need moving forward.
Students will have access to their schedules using the Infinite Campus Student Portal on August 4th after 4:00 PM. Students can use their Chromebook login information to gain access and view their schedule. Please help us to remind students to have their Chromebook charged and ready for learning each day, and to regularly check emails for daily updates and news a few days prior to school, and thereafter.
Here is a link to the Sandburg Bell Schedule as a reference. Students will use this bell schedule and their own schedule to move through their classes each day. Teachers will be taking attendance for classes at the beginning of the school day, and for each class period.
The process of scheduling a junior high school of 500 students is extremely complex. This summer, the Sandburg staff has been working through the scheduling process for all students. This is a time-consuming process that involves content specialists and student support staff. We appreciate the trust you have given us in using our best professional judgment in placing students. Our scheduling process is a team effort that is very complex and completed with great care. Please know that we work to place each student in the best schedule possible. Every consideration is made to best accommodate each student’s needs. Unfortunately, it is impossible to honor over 600 requests. As such, we will not be able to change schedules if students did not receive their electives of choice. Doing so would create unbalanced classes and upset the instructional environment for all. Thank you for your understanding. We appreciate you trusting our professional judgments on this important issue.
Please be sure to read the information from our school nurse, Mrs. Annerino, about required paperwork for the Health Office. The fall sports try-outs for girls basketball and boys soccer start in August. Cross country is no-cut and enrollment starts in August, as well. Students may not try-out or enroll in the sports without a current physical on file in the health office so get those school and sports physicals done this summer, while you have some time!
You can anticipate that you will receive newsletters from me at least once a month to keep you informed about school events and important reminders. This is in addition to our social media sites that will have more frequent posts. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @CSJHWildcats
We finalized our Walk Your Schedule day and time for all students which will be held on Tuesday, August 16th from 12:45-1:45. Students (and parents) are welcome to attend.
Additionally, we will host a more informal opportunity to walk your child's schedule on Monday, August 15th from 4-5. On the 15th, Mrs. Byrne, our Assistant Principal, and I will be in the building and students will be able to familiarize themselves with their class schedule.
Breakfast/Lunch Programs
As you may have seen in a recent email from School District 15, for the 2022-2023 school year, Carl Sandburg is eligible to participate in the National School Breakfast and School Lunch Programs called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
What does this mean?
All enrolled students will receive a free breakfast and lunch at school at no charge to your household. Your child(ren) will be able to participate without having to pay a fee, but we ask that you still complete the Fee Waiver form here (Spanish form) to determine if your family qualifies for other financial assistance such as school fees, athletic, and activity fee waivers. Again, completing the application is still necessary for other programs and assists with funding for educational programs in District 15.
If you have any questions about this communication or anything as it relates to Nutrition Services, please visit our website or do not hesitate to contact Nutrition Services at (847) 963-3929. We are here to help ensure our students get the nutrition they need so they are able to focus on learning.
A note from the Sandburg PTSA
Monday, August 8th at 6 pm: Join us for the first PTSA meeting of the school year in the newly remodeled library! PTSA is a great way to meet other parents and stay up to date on events like Fall Festival, Book Fair, Teacher Appreciation Week, WOW Career Day, and Eighth Grade Celebration.
Whether or not you are able to attend, please consider joining the CSJH PTSA. Joining the PTSA at the White, Red, or Wildcat Sponsor levels provides a direct donation to the CSJH PTSA, and will reduce the amount of fundraising required throughout the year. All members receive access to the PTSA MemberHub site and directory. You are not obligated to volunteer or attend monthly meetings by joining the PTSA. You are simply supporting your child’s school and CSJH PTSA.

A note from the Sandburg Health Office
Hello!
Here is a friendly reminder about Health office requirements as we start the school year.
- Annual health examinations are required for interscholastic sports participation. Physical exams are required- before trying out- for participation in an interscholastic sport. The exam form, completed and signed by a doctor, must be dated within 13 months prior to the start of practice or tryouts, and on file in the school nurse's office. Physical forms are available in the school office, online, and here: Certificate of Child Health Examination.
- All students new to District 15 will require a current physical exam with all immunizations up to date (Certificate of Child Health Examination), and students new to the State of Illinois will require an eye examination. This form is available in the school office, online, and here: State of Illinois Eye Examination Report.
- All students must provide proof of immunizations by October 15, 2022, or the student will be excluded from school. The list of current immunizations can be found on the district website here: IDPH Health Requirements.
- Students with health conditions such as asthma, epilepsy/seizures, severe allergies, and diabetes require the emergency action plan completed by their physician along with the Medication Administration Forms, signed by the physician and parent, for any medications required at school. Please bring all forms and medications on or before the first day of school.
If you have any questions regarding the above requirements, you may reach me at annerink@ccsd15.net. I will be back in the office next week to answer any phone calls.
Stay safe and we will see you soon!

In the absence of a trusted adult, Safe2Help Illinois offers students a safe, confidential way in which to share information that might help prevent suicides, bullying, school violence or other threats to school safety. This program is not intended to suspend, expel, or punish students. Rather, the goal is to get students to 'Seek Help Before Harm.'”
"Safe2Help Illinois is a 24/7 program where students can use a free app, text/phone, website (Safe2HelpIllinois.com) and other social media platforms to report school safety issues in a confidential environment. Once vetted, the tips will immediately be shared with local school officials, mental health professionals and/or local law enforcement, depending on the nature of the tip.
