PRESENTATION: The History of the Canarians in Texas
A presentation on the Canary Islanders who formed the first municipal government in San Antonio.
LeAnn Evans, daughter of Lee and Mary Jane (Perez) Evans, is an 11th generation descendant of the 56 Canary Island settlers that came to San Antonio in 1731. Her lineage goes back to the Navarro family and the Rivas land grant in Maverick County. She has been a generational resident of Helotes since the 1860s and still resides on family property granted to her ancestors.
She is the mother of a daughter who attends Texas A&M-Corpus and a son who attends Los Reyes Elementary. Her great-great grandfather, Lorenzo Morales, was a founder of the original Los Reyes School in the 1870s. She is employed with a CPA firm in Helotes and has been a volunteer with the Helotes Festival Association for 13 years. She is the former president and current treasurer of the Helotes Youth Rodeo Association, and is current 3rd VP of the Canary Islands Descendants Association.

A CITY IS BORN, 1981 – Present
The Historical Society of Helotes invites our membership to view its new exhibit: “Helotes History, A City is Born, 1981 – Present,” in the gallery of Helotes City Hall. The collection includes renderings of preliminary city boundaries, population and households through the years, early and current city leaders, and many other City artifacts.
