The Small Virtual Library

Week of 1/25/2021

This week's featured books are graphic novels from the 2021 Texas Maverick List!

The Texas Maverick Graphic Novels Reading List (TMGNRL) is a recommended reading list developed by public and school librarians from the Young Adult Round Table (YART). The purpose of the list is to encourage students in grades 6-12 to explore a variety of current books.

What I'm currently reading... (just finished it!)

Dress Coded by Carrie Firestone

Dress Coded is one of the 2021 Lone Star books featured in a previous virtual library.

I really enjoyed this book. It has a student viewpoint of how rules (especially the dress code) are enforced and how enforcing rules unfairly impacts students in different ways. The characters are interesting and the story reflects their different views of one of them being "dress coded" unfairly resulting in consequences for the whole grade level. It also tells the story through a series of podcasts that the main character, Molly Frost, hosts. It features mainly female characters but I think its a good middle school read for anyone and presents (for me as an adult) a unique perspective told through different experiences of being "dress coded" at Fisher Middle School and how Molly aims to change it.
