What's happening in the library?

Kindergarten Library

We spent time reading fiction books about spiders. The students loved predicting what Eensy Weensy Spider would climb next and exclaiming "Aaaarrgghh, spider!" each time we saw our spider friend. Afterwards, we had created our very own spider glyphs. A glyph is a pictorial form of data collection and allows students to quickly and easily record and analyze data. Plus, glyphs are fun and creative to make! Check out our spiders on the Parkway Library webpage!

Author: Laura Numeroff

The students loved the alliteration and had fun predicting what would happen next in these circular stories. We created our own class book using alliteration. Visit the Parkway Library website to view our class flipbooks online!

Author: Lucille Colandro

Next, we will be reading cumulative stories written by Lucille Colandro. These types of stories are great for students to practice their re-telling and sequencing skills.

Second Grade Library

In second grade we are looking at literature genres. We discussed that genre is a fancy word for a type or kind of book. Students completed a Reading Interest Survey to identify which genres they liked to read. By exposing students to a variety of genres, we hope to expand their interests in reading. We started with the mystery genre and will next explore the characteristics of the Fairy Tale genre.

2nd grade students have the opportunity to read their way to a FREE BOOK. Students can become a GENRE GURU by reading books from the various genres that we discuss, then complete a short worksheet about the book. Visit the Parkway Library website to learn more about the GENRE GURU project.

Third Grade Library

The focus for third grade has been gaining independence in the library! Students are learning about Destiny, the library's online card catalog, and about search techniques. Next we will focus on learning more about the reference resources that are available in the library (print and electronic).
