GPUTC Newsletter

Additional open evening added due to popular demand!

Welcome to the Greater Peterborough UTC newsletter

The essence of the work we will focus on at GPUTC is solving problems. Unlike Mark Watney, our students will not be marooned on an inhospitable planet, but they will be preparing for work and study in situations where there are limited resources and they have a problem to solve. I urge all our potential students to watch The Martian because it is all about overcoming obstacles … and doing it in style!

The development of practical skills – so they can design and then manufacture/build their designs – will be at the centre of the UTC experience. Many of the students who have applied for places are very enthusiastic about this element of their future courses. That’s not surprising when you stand in our fully-equipped workshop, view the £200,000 worth of equipment and remember there will be three more when we open in September 2016.

UTCs are different because they enable young people to study those technical courses hand-in-hand with academic qualifications such as GCSEs and A-levels… and then they ‘fuse’ the practical and academic via employer challenges where all their learning comes together.

It’s no wonder that our employer sponsors are already guaranteeing job interviews for our first graduates in 2018 because Greater Peterborough UTC students will have the best possible preparation for employment. If University is your aim then the collaborative learning, module-style of working again serves as a superb foundation for a degree course.

Greater Peterborough UTC myths

We have been hearing a number of #gputcmyths that we wanted to clear up for you ASAP. Read below to find out fact from fiction.

1. If I attend the Greater Peterborough UTC, this means that I cannot go to university when I am finished as universities do not accept UTC students.

Myth! All University Technical Colleges are sponsored by a university, ours being Anglia Ruskin. Getting involved in UTCs offers universities an opportunity to help ensure students are fully prepared for higher education. Universities play a central role in the development and running of a UTC. Alongside employers they help to shape the teaching and learning students receive. To see a list of universities that are involved with UTCs please see the following link:

2. I want to find out more about joining the Greater Peterborough UTC however have been told that I am not allowed to move school to pursue my interest in engineering/built environment as you are not allowed to move schools.

Myth! You can come and join the Greater Peterborough UTC either in year 10 or year 12. Students are allowed to move schools at any time during their education. If you are an engineer, builder, designer or architect of the future then come and join us at our next open evening on Thursday 21st January 6pm-8pm to find out what options are available to you with us, find out more here:

3. My friend told me that the Greater Peterborough UTC is just for boys!

Myth! The Greater Peterborough UTC is for boys and girls. 2.56 million engineering roles will need filling in the UK by 2022, so we need everybody to chip in! Watch the video below to find out if you could be the next great female engineer of the 21st century.

Save the date!

Our last open evening was a great success!

We had a great open evening on November 24th where we saw 200 people in just 2 hours! The night was so busy that we had queues out of the door, with people wanting to find out about the Greater Peterborough UTC and all it has to offer. A big thank you to all of our sponsors and partners who came along on the evening which included Anglian Water, the Larkfleet Group, Marshall Aerospace, Perkins, Kier, Rapid Electronics, F1 in Schools and many more. We all had great fun with the Oculus Rift, PiP the robot and learning how 3D printers work! The Larkfleet group and Kier told us about all things architecture and construction and we learnt what a typical day in the life of an Engineer looks like from Anglian Water, Perkins and Marshall Aerospace! We have now over 80 applications for the Greater Peterborough UTC for year 10 and year 12. There is still time to apply to come and join us in the New Year, see the link below for our application form.
