Senior Design Manager working for contractors on site and an architect
Biography
I graduated from the BSc (Hons) Building Design Management degree at Northumbria in 2003, following a few years working for a large contractor and studying architecture. The Design Management course altered my career expectations, especially as I had the opportunity to spend my placement year in Paris, which was an amazing experience.
After graduation, I worked as a Design Manager for several large contractors on big public / private partnerships, building hospitals, schools and offices. I also worked for a well known local architectural practice before joining the teaching staff at Northumbria. Projects that I am particularly proud of Design Managing are Newcastle City Library and Darlington Education Village.
I’m passionate about design, construction and improving the way we work in the industry. As Senior Lecturer I manage a module with Jane Matthews teaching BIM to Construction, Project and Design Management students. As a Design Manager I worked on several large public projects before joining Northumbria and I recently graduated from the IDBE Masters Programme at Cambridge University. In my “spare” time I’m attempting a PassiveHouse refurbishment of our home with my partner David.

Darlington Schools Education Village 2004 - 2006
Education Village brought together three schools under one roof, each with different age groups and abilities. As Design Manager for the main contractor, Kajima, I was based on site and managed the project design team. I also supervised the Design Co-ordinator and Document Control section. This was a difficult but incredibly rewarding project.

HM Revenue and Customs North East England, 1999 - 2004
I worked alongside the Design Manager responsible for the £45 million Benton Park View Project for Inland Revenue / Newcastle Estates. The experience reinforced to me the importance of good organisation and communication skills and how first-rate design management can provide an invaluable link between the various parties involved in a complex PFI. I was responsible for setting up the contractor’s document control process and was involved in a company wide review of design procedures.
