March is Reading Month!!!
Oh the Places You’ll Go!
Welcome to March is Reading Month! The theme is Oh the Places You’ll Go. We are taking the students on an adventure throughout March through different literary genres, or categories of books. Each student will receive a free book from the choices offered, a mechanical pencil, and a literary genre passport they will fill out throughout March.
Your students will write down each book they read in their passports and have a chance to win prizes! Families, we need your initials next to the date on their passports when students finish a book! That will allow them to earn raffle tickets each time they read five books.
Throughout the month, we will have guest readers from the community. We will have a magician assembly on Thursday, March 19th. Breakfast with a Buddy will be Friday, March 27th - stay tuned for details about that!
Each Friday will be a dress up day:
March 6 - PJ and Stuffed Animal Day
March 13 - Pattern Day
March 20 - Green and Gold Day
March 27 - Dress Like Your Book Character Day
April 3 - Hat Day
The focus is on encouraging children to love reading and engage in reading at home.
Remember that reading is reading. If your child prefers comic books to novels, the benefits of reading are the same. Let your child’s interests guide book selections. You can stop in at Coloma Library, talk to the librarian, and look for books together.
Research shows that one of the most important steps parents can take to support children’s literacy skill development is to have a literacy-rich home environment. Read for pleasure, talk with your children about how much you love reading, have books available, make reading a fun and special activity at home, not just for them, but also for you. Learning can happen at any time in any place. Consider creating a special reading corner in your home or having a read-in on a day when the weather prevents going outside. The March is Reading Month calendar includes different ways to incorporate reading in everyday tasks.
Be sure to check out Facebook for pictures throughout the month!

Dress for Winter
With cold weather here, please make sure that your child is dressed for outdoor recess. All students have a recess in addition to a lunch recess. From the Parent-Student Handbook page
6: All children will participate in short recess periods. This opportunity gives students a very necessary change of pace, which should enable them to be more receptive to the school program. We cannot honor requests for students to stay inside. Normally, students who are too ill to take part in outdoor play are too ill to be in school. Notes to stay inside for recess or noon play will be honored only upon a doctor's recommendation.
