College and Career Tips
November College Tip - Study Habits
At home activity:
- Ask you child if they agree or disagree with each of the following statements. Once you go through each statement, stop and discuss why they agreed or disagreed with certain statements:
- I struggle for long periods of time without becoming distracted or tired.
- I don't know how to take notes.
- The notes I take during class are often difficult for me to understand when I try to review them later.
- I don't usually review my class notes periodically throughout the semester to prepare for exams.
- I frequently can't keep up with my reading assignments, which causes me to cram the night before a test.
- I study a lot for each test, but my mid draws a blank when I get to the test.
2. After reflecting on their personal study habits, watch this video from Roadtrip
Nation/Texas Oncourse and discuss the following questions:
- What are your current study habits?
- What helps you focus?
- Describe what will need to change in your study habits when you transition to the next stage of your education?
- Goals! What would you like your study habits to look like?
- How can the choices you make in your career path set you up for academic success?
- What habits do you want to break?
3. Review the following study habits and help your student implement them in their routine:
- Planning ahead - Use a calendar to track your assignments, projects, quizzes and exams. Use the calendar to pace your self by determining which days you will study and periodically review you notes.
- Chunking - Break up your notes into small pieces (chunks) and plan out time to focus on certain areas or certain days. Decide how many total hours you want to study and break down those hours into shorter segments throughout the week.
- Speak, Write, Sketch - This skills will help you remember information and us especially helpful when studying with a friend. After studying a section of your notes, close you notebook and repeat the information back by speaking, writing or sketching. Pause after "Speak, Write, Sketch," and practice this skill with content you learned from a previous lesson.
- Exploring Examples - Anytime you study, pause and write an example (or evidence) of what you are studying. Example - When thinking about the American Revolution and the Texas Revolution, create an example about each and determine the similarities and differences between the two.
- Annotation - Use a highlighter, pen, notecards or even stickers to annotate notes in your notebook; you can also use them on your handouts during class or study independently. This practice can also be used during reading assignments. Some examples of this include underlining familiar words, drawing arrows to show related ideas, using a star to label important ideas, and highlighting words you do not know. Annotation will be extremely helpful for you when studying notes in the future.
