Message From The Principal


What a perfect start to the school year! On behalf of the teachers and staff, I want to welcome you to Monroe Elementary, the BEST school in Oklahoma! I'm glad you are a part of our school community!

Each year we welcome new staff members! This year our new staff members include:

Monroe could not be a successful school without involved parents such as yourselves! If you haven't already done so, please join PTA! PTA is a great organization that provides many opportunities for involvement at our school. Please check the Monroe website or the PTA website for dates and times of meetings.

School safety is our highest priority at Monroe. As we have done in the past, we will conduct several safety drills this year, including fire drills, tornado drills and intruder drills. We also will be practicing how to get to our Safe Place at 2500 McGee Dr. (the business building on the west side of McGee, north of Highway 9). We would use this location in the event of an emergency that would require us to leave school grounds.

Making sure students get home safely is another priority at Monroe. Please help us accomplish this goal by following these safety practices:

  • Adhere to the speed limit on McGee
  • No texting while driving or in the school parking lots
  • Always use the crosswalk to cross McGee

Thank you for helping us pilot our visitor management system last year in the office. This year we will continue to ask parents, visitors and volunteers to check in at the office to receive a visitor's pass. We are implementing the same visitor management system district wide. It is called School Safe ID and is very user friendly! Parents, visitors and volunteers will now be able to check in at a self service kiosk. Please remember to bring a form of identification the first time you check in with the new system.

New this year, we are increasing safety protocol by implementing car rider tags for after school car dismissal. If your student is a car rider, you will be provided a tag to hang on your rearview mirror for when you pick up your child after school. Teachers have been instructed to not release students to a car without a car rider tag starting Monday, Aug. 21. If you come through the afternoon car pickup line and do not have your tag, teachers will refer you to the office to get a new one. This new procedure is just another step in our ongoing focus on student safety. I thank you in advance for helping us smoothly implement our new car rider tags!

All day, every day, attendance is very important at Monroe! Want our students at school each day not only because with LOVE them, but because absences are directly connected with student achievement. Students can only learn what their teachers are teaching if they are at school, so please do your very best to make sure your student is at school on time every day. We appreciate your support!

We have settled into our new office and are loving it! The two new classrooms near the office are very close to completion. Once they are ready for occupancy, they will be home to our GT program and our Math Specialist, EL specialist and Speech Pathologist. We are so thankful for the support of the Norman community for providing these improvement to our building!

Each day your children come to school to learn and to grow. We look forward to each upcoming accomplishment and event as the year unfolds. As educators we are committed to providing a nurturing, positive and challenging academic experience for every student. In partnership with you, we will provide guidance and knowledge that afford every child multiple opportunities to be successful. Solar Eclipse

We have had many questions about the upcoming Solar Eclipse, Monday, August 21! While we are not holding an all school observation of the eclipse, classroom teachers may choose to observe the eclipse. Teachers have been provided clear safety guidelines from the district for viewing the solar eclipse and will communicate with you directly if they are planning to take their class outside to view. No students will be outside for any reason other than supervised "eclipse events" during the hours of 11 am. to 2 p.m. on Monday, August 21. This means there will be no recess during those hours as well. Please contact your teacher or the principal if you have questions!

Popsicles in the Park

PTA is hosting Popsicles in the Park on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 6-7:15 pm. This is such a fun event to kick off the school year! Bring the entire family and a picnic dinner or just come for popsicles! It's a great way to meet new friends and families while enjoying a nice cold treat!

PTA Meeting

There will be a brief PTA Meeting at 6:30 pm during the Popsicles in the Park event on Tuesday, Aug. 22. The meeting will be held at the picnic tables/pavillion area. Come meet Monroe's great PTA!!

Hat Day!

Our first Hat Day of the year will be next Friday, Aug. 25! Students can bring $1 and wear their favorite hat all day! Money raised goes to support the needs of our school community as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Norman!

Curriculum Night

Curriculum Night is coming soon on Thursday, September 7:

PK, K, 1st Grade: 4:30-5:30 pm

2nd, 3rd Grade: 5:30-6:30 pm

4th, 5th Grade: 6:30-7:30 pm

This is an opportunity to hear about what your student will be learning throughout the school year, plus other important information. We hope you will put this important event on your calendar!
