A tsunami is a series of waves reaching heights up to 100 feet on land. They can destroy wide parts of land and wipe waste out to sea and is floating to other parts of the world. Tsunamis can wipe populations of animals and humans and kills over 100,000 people/animals.
How Canada Is Involved/Why Is Canada Involved?
Canada was involved in Japans tsunami. Canadians have already donated over $77,000 to help victims. Canadian Red Cross team says volunteers on ground to help with evacuation, search and rescue and first aid. More than 130,000 blankets and 30,000 emergency relief kits and sleeping kits have been handed out to evacuees.896 medical teams have treated over 87,000 patients and donations from the Canadian Red Cross continues to support Japanese Red Cross relief and recovery activities as they help people recover from the worst devastation imaginable.
What Was Destroyed?
Tons of things were destroyed by this tsunami. 120,000 buildings destroyed and 220,000 were damaged. 78,000 destroyed buildings were completely washed away. 132,000 acres of land was submerged by the tsunami in six prefectures in Tohoku and Kanto regions. The destroyed buildings higher in areas where onshore water level surpassed 6.6 feet
How Japans Is Still Recovering
Japan is still recovering from the damage.27.6 million tons of debris were left behind after emergency and while 77% was transported to waste disposal. Seventy abandoned ships mostly fishing boats still remain in evacuation zones. Lots of work got underway to demolish and remove ships. Workers are using cranes to remove cabins and structures.
Some Cool Facts about the Japan Tsunami
As the tsunami crossed the pacific ocean, a 5 foot high (1.5m) high wave killed more than 110,000 nesting seabirds at the Midway Atall National Wildlife refuge and in Antarctica, the seismic waves from the earth quake sped up the Williams ice stream, jolting it by about 1.5 feet (0.5 meters).
Tsunamis are a dangerous disaster that effect populations of life. Destroys cities and towns. This tsunami killed 19000 were killed or missing.
