It's All About Your Mindset

I've been reading the book Mindset by Carol Dweck, and what I'm learning is making me question many things I've done as an educator and parent in the past. The premise of the book is that in our culture we have a "fixed" mindset, which means we believe people achieve success because of their intelligence or ability. The opposite of a "fixed" mindset is a "growth" mindset, which means you believe that people achieve success through effort.

I found this newsletter this week for ways that parents can promote a growth mindset and thought it was too good not to share. Even though it was written for parents, I think it has great value for us as educators. I'll keep my comments short so you can read the blog entry. (Be sure to watch the video as well.) We will be discussing the growth mindset and its impact on our students in the coming weeks.

Tech Task of the Week

Thank you so much to all who tweeted last week using the hashtag #MISbilliesrock. This week's Tech Task is very similar. One of the latest things trending on Twitter is #CelebrateMonday. This is a way to categorize tweets that celebrate the great things going on in our school. Your challenge is to tweet something tomorrow that celebrates learning in our school. Be sure to use the hashtag #CelebrateMonday and #MISbilliesrock.

On another note, don't forget about starting to check out some Twitter chats. Soon we will begin participating in chats with educators across the country, but there's a learning curve. I encourage you to find one you like and just read the tweets your first time. It won't take long before you'll be in there participating! A word to the wise -- make sure you aren't trying to do something else while you're in a Twitter chat. As you can see below, cooking pancakes and following #leadupchat on Saturday mornings might not be the best idea. :)

This week we will celebrate our teachers and staff and all they do for us each day. Each day has a theme and you can expect special surprises all week! All staff members can wear jeans Monday - Thursday and are encouraged to participate in dressing up according to the themes. Enjoy your week!
