Place
Austin's elevation is varies from 425 feet to 1,000 feet above sea level. The city is a total area of 271.8 square miles. Approximately 6.9 square miles of this area is water. The eastern side is mostly flat, but the western side has many hills. That is what is known as "Texas Hill Country". Because the hills to the west are limestone rock, some of the city is subjected to flash floods from the runoff caused by thunderstorms.
