YSES Newsletter
May 22, 2020
Message from Ms. Gullo
It has been a great week of synchronous support with our students and teachers being able to come together through Google Meet. It was great to see the YSES Eagles! They have grown!
Some updates as we continue in distance learning. We are still awaiting the determination of the last day of school. We are hoping to have this information in the coming week. We are currently planning for pick-up and drop-off of materials for our students. You will be receiving an email notification of items that need to be returned to school and the date and time that you should come to Yellow Springs for the curb-side drop-off/pick-up. Pick-up and drop-off will be occurring during the week of June 8th.
For our fifth grade families and students, I wanted to let you know that our school team is planning your recognition of completion of elementary school. We will let you know the details when they are finalized.
Thank you all for your continued support of your child(ren) during distance learning. We are most appreciative of your efforts! Best regards, Sue
Video Conferencing with Google Meet - Helpful tip
Please know that students must access the Google meet through their school Google account. Google may show the icon for the student, but it is possible that the student isn't actually signed into Google. This will prevent the student from accessing Google Meet. One way to resolve this issue is to click on the Google drive icon (yellow, blue, green triangle) that is in the same row as Schoology on the Media Center homepage. This will sign the student in to Google so they can access the Google Meet in Schoology.
Welcome Dr. Swire!

Notes from the Guidance Counselor
Term 4 Grade Reporting
You should have received an email update from your child's teacher regarding term 4 grade reporting. Students in grades two through five who participate in the FCPS Continuity of Learning (COL) plan will receive a term 4 grade of Pass (P) for each class, while students who do not participate or are unable to access classwork will receive an Incomplete (ICOL). Pass indicates that there is evidence that the student has met the learning expectations during COL. Incomplete indicates that there is not enough evidence that the student has met the learning expectations during COL. Students in kindergarten and first grade will earn the same grades they have had in the previous three terms: Exceeds Expectations (EE), Meets Expectations (ME), Approaches Expectations (AE), Developing Expectations (DE), or Not Evaluated (NE).
FCPS will not provide personal and social development ratings during Continuity of Learning at the elementary level. Also, specials grades (art, music, and physical education) will not be indicated on the term four report card. While special grades will not be recorded on the term four report card, we highly encourage your child to continue to participate in the specials' assignments during continuity of learning. The assignments and activities provided by Mrs. Shields-Roberson, Mr. Cabell, and Mr. Foit provide an outlet to engage our students in a variety of ways to develop skills.
School Hours and Printed Packets
Our front office lobby will be available 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM on school days to pick up printed materials. When stopping to get printed materials, please take a packet for your child’s assigned grade level. Due to guidance from the Maryland State Health Department, we are not accepting completed print materials here at school. We encourage you to take a picture of the completed work or scan the work and send to your child's teacher. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can assist you.
If you need items other than the printed student packets, please call the office before coming to school to arrange for pick up of those items.
Technology Support
Our user support specialist . Mrs. Voorhees will be playing an important role in supporting our families with technology issues during distance learning. She will have office hours 9:00-11:00 AM on school days where can she respond to questions and issues with technology. Mrs. Voorhees can be reached at amy.voorhees@fcps.org.
Many of our teachers have shared office hours with you of when they will be responding to emails during distance learning. Teachers may respond to emails before their determined office hours, but please know we still adhere to the practice of a response within twenty-four hours.
