Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 4 July
Then Jesus told him,
"Because you have seen me,
you have believed;
blessed are those who have not seen
and yet have believed."
~John 20:29~
Dear Parents and Staff
Yesterday the staff and children from Pre-Primary to Year Six celebrated Mass as thanksgiving for all that we have achieved this Term. The Gospel Reading focused on the disciple Thomas and his denial that Jesus had risen, until he could witness His wounds for himself. Like Thomas, we, too, may have doubts however, whilst we can’t see Jesus’ wounds, we can witness His presence in our world through the amazing acts of kindness that we witness daily.
PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS
Thank you to all parents who attended these very important meetings yesterday afternoon and evening. There is only so much that may be relayed to parents about their child’s progress through a written Report and these face to face meetings provide the opportunity to both celebrate what has been achieved and to share plans for future improvement. Open communication between parents and staff is critical if we are to achieve the best learning outcomes for the children. If you feel that you need to discuss your child’s progress in more detail, please make an appointment with their teacher for early next Term.
SUPPORT YOUR TEAM
I’m looking forward to seeing the array of team colours that everyone is wearing tomorrow when the children and staff put their loyalty front and centre as a special celebration for the end of Term. After last week’s expected win by the mighty Carlton Blues I’ll certainly be wearing my “old dark navy blue” gear.
To make this an even more memorable day our very generous P&F is providing a free sausage sizzle lunch for everyone. We have gluten free and vegetarian products available for those who have advised us of these dietary requirements.
DATES TO REMEMBER
· Term 2 concludes at 3.00pm tomorrow.
· Term 3 commences on Monday 22 July at 8.45am.

THE BISHOPS' RELIGIOUS LITERACY ASSESSMENT 2019
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) from the week commencing Monday 5 August in Term 3. The assessment will be accessible to students online.
The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests developed and marked by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. Formal school and student reports are produced by CEWA and will become available to schools in Term 4.
The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of students performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, short and extended response items. Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school-based assessment programs in RE.
Please contact your child’s teacher or myself if you have any enquires regarding the administration of The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment.

Altar Servers
Altar Servers play a very visible part in Parish liturgy. For the young person, their time of altar service plays an important part in their personal spiritual growth. The Altar Servers’ special ministry is to serve in the sanctuary in areas pertaining to the altar and lectern. They assist with the smooth flow of the liturgical rite, enhancing the spirit of worship and prayer.
In July 1992, Pope John Paul II confirmed a Vatican clarification that the 1986 Code of Cannon Law #230 allows both males and females of any age to assist at serving Mass.

PRE PRIMARY NEWS
Pre-Primary has been very busy this Term.
We had lots of fun making gifts and cards for our Mums in the lead up to Mother’s Day. Thank you to all of the Mums who attended our ‘Mothers’ Day Spa’. The children had a wonderful time pampering their Mums with various treatments and activities. It was a lovely afternoon. We hope the Mums enjoyed it too.
In Term 2 we participated in 5 Funky Fitness sessions. Each incursion session helped us to develop; fundamental movement skills, crossing the midline, balance and directional language. These skills were all developed through dance, play and drama themes.
One of the highlights in Term 2 was dressing up in our pyjamas for pyjama day. We appreciated learning about the importance of the day and particularly enjoyed it when Mr Winsor read us a bedtime story- The Ugly Duckling.
The Pre-Primary students have been very busy learning lots of sounds and completing various Sound Waves activities. This week we are focusing on the ‘ay’ sound and we are reading a story called Spend a Day in Backwards Bay. Our parents and teachers think we are really clever as we are also having a go at reading the high frequency words which are in our reading books that we take home each day.
In Mathematics we are continuing to be number experts. We have been working really hard on learning numbers and have been practising the correct way to write them. We are very clever at remembering the days of the week and have now begun learning the months of the year. We have even started to learn about addition and subtraction. We really are becoming mathematics champions.
In History we have been learning about our Families. We have identified who our immediate family members are and have started to discover our extended family. We have produced some amazing family trees which are going to be displayed in the classroom.
In Religion, we have been learning about how we are all a part of a community and how we can help people within our school and church communities. Father Quynh came and visited our classroom last week and spoke to use about the importance of being kind to our family and friends. It was great to have Father come in and have a chat with us.
We are looking forward to all of the new and exciting things we are going to learn in Pre-Primary in Term 3.
We hope everyone has a refreshing and restful holidays.
