March 17, 2016
Dear Balboa ES Community,
The Dragon Festival, "Miles for Smiles", book reports, writing celebrations, field trips to Miraflores & Casco Antiguo, and classroom centers have given us opportunities to share together this month at Balboa Academy ES. Our children love sharing their school activities with their parents and we love having parents at school. Our next upcoming activity is Escuela Para Padres on Friday, March 18th at 8:30 am in the MS Wolf Room. Ms. Magee will be sharing information about our upcoming school-wide accreditation visit which will be April 4-6, 2016. We hope you can attend.
Have a Happy Spring vacation!
ES Assistant Principal
Together we cultivate a caring community
of lifelong learners, independent thinkers,
and builders of a promising future.
Each year the Balboa Academy's Parent Teacher Association (PTSO) works together with the school and students for its biggest event, the Dragon Festival. PTSO organizes, coordinates and facilitates and finances the festival. The main purpose of the Festival is to raise funds for our clubs, student councils, teams, and organizations; most of them led by our BA students. Such clubs and organizations, use these funds for their activities and the charities they support, for instance, Special Olympics, Make a Wish, Nutrehogar, etc.
This year, with an attendance of around 1,800 people, the festival was a huge success! The PTSO distributed about 80% of the profits to all the organizations that participated. The rest of the money goes to partially paying the operational costs of the festival. The PTSO is very grateful to parents and companies that help to sponsor the festival; without them it would not be possible for its success.
Hi! My name is Catherine Henne. I grew up outside of Washington, D.C., in Oak Hill, Virginia, and lived there my whole life. I am a Masters student, specializing in Elementary Education at Christopher Newport University, where I also attended for my undergraduate studies. I completed the first half of student teaching at Richneck Elementary school, in Newport News, Virginia. I am excited for this incredible opportunity to complete the second half of my student teaching at Balboa Academy! I always dreamed of teaching outside the United States, and this internship has given me that experience, and so much more. I have loved getting to know your children, and I look forward to helping them reach their potential.
Hello all! My name is Suzanne Florey. I am currently a student at Christopher Newport University located in Newport News, Virginia where I am getting a masters degree in elementary education. I have been working with children of all ages for over six years now. I am so excited for the opportunity to finish my student teaching here at Balboa Academy. One goal of mine as an educator is to instill a love for learning in each child. I also want to help each student reach their full potential, and I hope to do that by exciting students about the world of learning and broadening his or her academic interests. Thank you for welcoming me into your school!
