Message from the Principal Donna Burke
Many times when I tell people I’m a middle school principal they look at me and say, "Middle school . . . How do you do it?" I do it because I love middle schoolers. I love to see them grow, change, make mistakes, learn from mistakes, explore different activities and decide which one they like. It is really fun to watch them as they go on to high school and then become successful in college and/or in a career.
One thing about middle school that is often challenging for some people is to realize that they are not "mini-adults." Some of our students look like adults, but they still have the thinking processes of 12, 13, 14 -year-olds-- some of them even younger due to COVID. Middle school is a time of transition from elementary to high school and it is a time when many students struggle with the ability to handle hard situations. Grades come out and some do not know how to handle getting a B or C. Some students try out for a team and don't make it or they are on a team and don't get as much playing time as they have in the past. In addition, some students don’t know how to handle getting along with their peers. Handling conflict is hard for adults, but throw in the mind of a middle schooler and it is tough . . . then you add in social media and that makes it even more difficult.
Middle school can be a tough time, and we want to help the students as they navigate through some of these challenges. This time of year we often see conflicts between students arise. Some students choose to deal with them by using words that are not kind. Some students want to throw out empty threats or push, shove and wrestle because they don’t know how to handle a situation. Other students take to social media and post hurtful things. As our students face these challenges, we want them to know that they can go to a trusted adult at school or at home to help them navigate through any situation. As I said before, handling conflict is hard enough for adults, so we need to help our middle school students deal with tough times in a way that is healthy and productive.
