Coming up, Spring Fling!
We still need help bringing in items for our 2nd grade themed basket. Our basket is Sports themed. Anything sports! We don't have many items for our basket, so any donations would be appreciated.
Spring Fling will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016. It will follow the PTA general meeting. Festivities are from 5:45 pm until 8:00 pm. Be on the look out for more information!
We still need help for our Buddy Benches!
The students have been working so hard to advertise and collect money for our Buddy Bench project. We are so close to our goal of $500. We currently have $304!! We ONLY have the weekend to finish collecting. Please help us by bringing in spare change by Monday, April 11th. We would really appreciate it.
Math
We started with Module 10 this week; students worked with two-and-three digit numbers. We, second-grade teachers, were so impressed with how well they applied their previous learning to this module. They used the count on strategy and used tools such as the hundred chart and the number line to solve the problems. They also composed numbers; please take a look at the example below.
Science
When studying the food chain, it is so interesting to know the source of all energy! Did you know that the sun is the initial source of energy in the food chain? From there, plants get energy from the sun. Animals get energy from plants and other animals. Finally, decomposers get energy from deal plants and animals. We have also been categorizing animals into groups of herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and decomposers, and placing them into the food chain. The students were relieved to find out that humans are at the top of the food chain! :-)
Reader's Workshop
This week in Reader's Workshop we finished up our study of inventors and their inventions. We practiced reading closely, paying attention to details, in order to answer questions about the text. We also looked at describing the inventors by talking about their character traits.
Writer's Workshop
We finished up our expository writing about inventors by adding introductions and conclusions to our paragraphs on inventors. We used the rest of the week to practice our narrative writing.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we are working on planning on making our own inventions. We are thinking about problems that we see at home, school, and in the world. Then we are taking the problems and coming up with a solution to the problem through an invention. Our planning process includes making a drawing of the proposed invention and answering some questions to get us thinking about our audience of the inventions.
