"Counseling Corner"
Hello Firebird Families,
I am Katie Wells, the school counselor for kids in PreK through 4th grade. Currently, I am using an social-emotional curriculum called Second Step in the classes to help with student emotions, behavior, and academics. Here is a snapshot of what we are learning right now:
Kindergarten
Students are learning about refusing bullying and "bystander power." We want our students to be safe at MHLT! Students learn how to recognize, report, and refuse bullying. They also learn what they can do to help others as a bystander. Let's all be UPstanders!
1st Grade
These students are learning how to deal with strong feelings and how to calm down anger and frustration. Stop, name your feeling, calm down. Stop! I am feeling angry. Then take deep belly breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth.
2nd Grade
We are working on managing anger and anxiety. Students know they can take deep belly breaths, counting, use positive self talk ("I can do it. It will be okay.")
3rd Grade
We are working on refusing bullying and being 'UPstanders.' When we recognize bullying, we can refuse it or report to a caring adult right away. As UPstanders we don't join in bullying, ignore bullying, or laugh when bullying is happening. As Firebirds we do our best to help stop the problem.
4th Grade
We have just discussed avoiding jumping to conclusions, and will be moving on to talking about bullying. When we jump to conclusions we often make problems bigger or create a problem that doesn't exist. Students are learning that if we don't ask questions and talk respectfully we cannot know exactly what is going on.
Thank you,
Katie Wells
