Kids and Money
As a parent, we tend to always want our children to have what they want, or be better off than we were as a child. This week, I decided to send this article as the parent of now two young adult ladies, I am finding that managing finances is very challenging for them. To instill positive habits in regards to spending and saving money, choosing wisely, and knowing priorities, needs to come from parent modeling and teaching at a very young age. As parents, you are your child's most powerful role models and they watch you and listen to everything you say, even when you think they are not listening or paying attention!
Enjoy the article. Timing wise, this may not be the best, because we do have our Book Fair coming up! The Book Fair is our number one fundraiser for our library, so we look forward to your support as you promote literacy with your children.
Thank you all, once again, for all you do as we work together on behalf of your child's education. We love your children!

GIFTED NEWS
UPCOMING EVENT:
First grade parents are invited to the Old Donation School Open House on
Thursday, Feb. 2nd 6:00 p.m. at 2509 Seaboard Road
Parents of first graders who are interested in having their child considered for gifted identification may initiate an application. Applications are due March 1st.
Please go on line to https://giftedapplication.vbcps.com to complete the Parent Information Form/application for gifted identification, Old Donation School, gifted art, and/or gifted dance.
To log in, you will use your student’s permanent number. Most students have memorized this number as it is used as their library number, their lunch number and for logging in to school computers.
The password for the referral is the same password your child uses as school to log in to the computers. The password will change quarterly. Our school has a formula for the password but some classrooms have created their own. You will have to ask your child about his/her password. The formula for the school is:
(The number for the quarter we are in, 1-4)jbdes(capitalized first initial) (capitalized last initial) so mine might look something like this: 1jbdesKR during the first quarter.
If you want to be considered for Old Donation School, you must also select that on the application at this time.
The Gifted Art and Dance program is a one day a week pull out program. You can read more about it on line:
http://www.vbschools.com/curriculum/gifted/elemgift.asp
Fifth grade applications for gifted identification, Old Donation School, and Plaza’s Middle Years Program are due Feb. 1st. Use the same log in information in the first grade paragraph above for gifted identification and/or Old Donation School. To access the MYP application: http://www.plazams.vbschools.com/pages/secondary/ibmyp/

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR IS COMING SOON!
Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
Set the example. Let children see you read.
Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills.
Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
