Unit Activities
The 1st graders have been rotating through unit skills with each P.E. teacher as well as some grade level game days. The first round of units was Throwing & Catching, Jump Roping, and Striking. Now they are moving through Kicking/Punting, Juggling, Climbing/Tumbling. Each day the 1st graders begin with a short jog and a combination of strength and flexibility exercises. Then they begin their unit activities!
Throwing & Catching
Taught by Coach Adams, throwing and catching for 1st graders begins with the basic techniques of throwing such as stepping with the opposite foot, leading with the elbow, rotation and release. Tossing and bowling are also incorporated into the throwing activities. We've worked on individual as well as partner catching and many throwing/catching games.
Jump Roping
In 1st grade jump roping, many students are just learning to jump rope for the very first time. We work on proper timing and continuous jumping both in place and while traveling. The 1st graders are also learning to jump inside a long rope turned by Ms. Brummer to establish a rhythm (big jump, little jump) that they can use to help them with individual jumping.
Movement Education
First grade Movement Education students learn how to leap, jump, hop, skip, grapevine as well spacial awareness. Coach Costas incorporates these activities into games such as Traffic and many others.
