What is the fall of the Bastille?

  • The Bastille was a fortress in Paris, known formally as the Bastille Saint-Antoine. It played an important role in the internal conflicts of France and for most of its history was used as a state prison by the kings of France.

When was the fall of the Bastille?

  • The Bastille was originally constructed in 1370, to protect the walled city of Paris from English attack.

  • The Bastille was first used as a state prison in the 17th century, and its cells were reserved for upper-class felons, political troublemakers, and spies.

  • The fall of the Bastille was actually on July 14th, 1789.
