The Bastille was a fortress in Paris, known formally as the Bastille Saint-Antoine. It played an important role in the internal conflicts of France and for most of its history was used as a state prison by the kings of France.
When was the fall of the Bastille?
The Bastille was originally constructed in 1370, to protect the walled city of Paris from English attack.
The Bastille was first used as a state prison in the 17th century, and its cells were reserved for upper-class felons, political troublemakers, and spies.
The fall of the Bastille was actually on July 14th, 1789.
