Middle School Traffic Update

As many of you know, the traffic at the middle school in the afternoon is a bit overwhelming, with walkers, busses, and an increased number of private cars all competing for space and priority in the parking lot. The morning is not as overwhelming because busses are contained at the high school and we are able to open our larger bus circle for the private car line. We have worked with the high school and the transportation department on the following solution:

  1. Beginning Monday, April 12, the entire fleet of busses will be parked at the high school for afternoon dismissal.

  2. Students who ride the busses will walk through the tunnel to catch their busses near the high school tunnel exit on Springfield Way. Springfield way is closed to through-traffic at that time.

  3. Private cars picking up students at the middle school will proceed to our back traffic circle as they do in the morning. This will allow us to contain more cars on our campus to alleviate backup onto Bergen and Paper Mill Roads.

We recognize that the traffic situation is less than ideal with the increased number of private car pickups, and we think this solution will help to fix the problem. While people have been patient in general, there have been some unpleasant exchanges between parents and other parents and even between parents and staff members during drop off and pickup times. I would take this opportunity to ask everyone to be patient and kind and to follow the directions of SDST staff on our campus. Thanks, and have a great weekend.
