Mrs. Smith's Weekly Newsletter

September 14, 2020

Back to School Night will be this Thursday, September 17. Each teacher will host three Google Meet sessions. They will be 7:00 – 7:20 PM, 7:25 – 7:45 PM, and 7:50 – 8:10 PM. For preschool through grade 5, each teacher will provide the same information at all three sessions. This will allow those with multiple children the chance to attend different classes. The sessions will include information about classroom procedures and curriculum content. You will have an opportunity to ask questions, but please understand that this is a new experience for all teachers. They may have to get back to you with answers to some of your questions.

The middle school teachers (Mrs. Boland, Mrs. Plunkett, Mrs. Culp, and Mrs. Fink) will be together with the first session being for 6th grade (7:00PM), the second for 7th grade (7:25), and the third for the 8th grade (7:45). Mrs. Boland will stay on to discuss any items specifically for the 8th graders at the end of the third session.

Fr. Dan and I will provide prerecorded remarks to open the evening. These messages will be available on the website prior to the class meetings on Thursday. Mrs. Wojnar, Events and Activities Director, will provide a video outlining the activities that are usually offered at St. Charles so our new families can learn about them. Our plan is to resume activities as soon as they can be managed safely.

It is disappointing for all of us that Back to School Night will not be in the school this year. We all appreciate your understanding of the need to adjust the format of this event.

Sometimes it's Just a Cold or Allergies...

but let's not take unnecessary chances!

Tomorrow you will notice that the form in the Genesis Parent Portal reads differently than it did. It has been edited to more clearly indicate when a stuffy nose and/or congestion are a concern. Temperatures must still be taken, and will be taken again at the doors of school until most of you are able to complete the form in Genesis. I have been waiting this evening to send this newsletter out so I can share the text of the form, but it has not yet been sent to me. I wanted to be sure you had this week's communication so I am sending it without the sample of the form. You will see it in Genesis tomorrow morning.

You are asked to continue to check your child for the symptoms listed, but we do understand that children get colds and experience seasonal allergies. If your child can comfortably handle these symptoms without assistance (blowing nose, washing hands, disposing of tissues) then s/he may attend school. Some of our youngest children are not quite ready to manage these skills and it may be best to keep them home.

We must take every measure to avoid spreading any illness among the students, even the common cold. It is always best to consult with your child's physician when any symptoms appear. Your physician can provide documentation that your child has seasonal allergies. Be sure your doctor understands that your child(ren) attends school in person among classmates and teachers.

Any indication that a fever is present requires that your child(ren) stay home. Any question about the cause of congestion, such as a sinus infection or other serious illness should be addressed with your family physician. When in doubt, please always err on the side of caution!

We understand that the extra precautions needed due to COVID-19 will result in increased absences for many of our children. Our teachers are prepared to provide missed assignments and help your child(ren) stay current in their lessons. We will support your decision to be extra cautious at this time.

We are not permitting birthday treats to be sent in and shared with classmates at this time. There is a School-Wide Birthday Celebration scheduled for Friday, January 15. Traditionally, that is a dress down day for students. If COVID restrictions allow, we will add a special treat to this dress down celebration (birthday cupcakes, etc.) That decision will have to come after the first of the year.

Did You Complete These Forms?

There is a form in the Genesis Parent Portal to verify that you have read and reviewed the Student/Family Handbook with your child(ren). Many of you have already completed this. Thank you.

If you have not already done so, please complete the Emergency Contact Form and email it to Mrs. Glass.

If you have not already done so, please complete the Photo Permission 2020 - 2021 form and email it to your child's classroom/homeroom teacher.
