NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
Cornerstone International Academy (C.I.A.) takes pride in ensuring a healthy environment that offers equal opportunities for all students in learning and harnessing their potentials. However, bullying in schools has become recognized as one of the most pervasive problems in schools across cultures and one that is of particular interest to the management and staff of C.I.A. Making the life of others uncomfortable in school by any form is highly abhorred by the school and every effort needed to eradicate this problem will not be minced with.
Bullying could be defined as any repeated physical, emotional or psychological, and/or verbal intimidation or attack that is meant to cause distress and/or harm to an intended victim. Such acts may include but not limited to: verbal abuse (calling others by unpleasant names, spreading false information about others, ridiculing or teasing others, negative predictions or comparisons, cursing or shaming others); physical abuse (kicking, hitting, pinching, pulling or pushing others, plotting the fall of others or throwing things at others to harm them); and other intended behaviors to cause a person’s discomfort (making faces, social exclusions such as depriving others of engaging in social or group activities, crushing people's work or properties, deliberate disruption or a fight).
The short-term and long-term ripple effects of bullying, in some situations, have been fatal for both the victim and the bully across the world. Some include school avoidance; sleep disturbance; social isolation (difficulty maintaining social relationships); higher risk of illness; intense fear; low self-esteem; poor school performance; and in some cases, increased risk of suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts. No child deserves to experience these pervasive effects of bullying, and our students are particularly encouraged to refrain from any act that constitutes bullying. Since the school will not hesitate to deal with such culprits without fear or favor, drastic actions have been taken in the past to address hints of bully attempts, and the school remains unrelenting in its efforts in handling this cause.
Our students are encouraged to exhibit all the ten learner profile attributes, especially, CARING, as we continue to create a bully-free school environment for ourselves and others.
STARS OF THE MONTH
The following students have been recognized as C.I.A.’s “Stars of the Month” for February 2020.
Each student has exhibited the traits of the IB Learner Profile both in and out of the classroom.
