November 2021 Issue

Happy Thanksgiving Month!

We hope your classes are going well as we come to the end of week 11! There are only five weeks left in the semester with finals. Keep up the hard work, we're almost finished!

Thanksgiving Break is just over a week away! As a reminder, there will be no classes held from Wednesday, November 24 through Friday, November 26. University campuses and offices will remain open on Wednesday, but will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

Enjoy the well-deserved break and relax while spending time with family and friends!

Student Organization Highlights

Comm Club Inter-Org Collaborations

CommClub is a student organization that focuses on communication! Be it written, spoken, intercultural or cross cultural, we cover it all! CommClub makes it a goal to do collaborations with other organizations which could be non-university places like YStark or other Kent State student clubs. Recently we did a collaboration with the multicultural and international student clubs where we talked about facts vs opinions and how these tie in to cross cultural communication and stereotypes. We are also planning on collaborating with other student clubs in the spring semester such as the English Club and the Creative Writing Club. Communicating with others and getting to know people is our passion!

We meet once a week and always welcome new faces of any major!

Creative Writing Club

The Kent State Stark Creative Writing Club has enjoyed a full semester. At the October Literary Costume Party, participants came dressed as famous voices from the past such as Edgar Alan Poe (and his Raven), Virginia Woolf, Baudelaire, and Alexander the Great. Professor Bob King starred as the protagonist from JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, and Professor Jessica Jones appeared as Queen Elizabeth, with her contemporary courtly kitten, Contigo Tortuga. The students' dramatic readings were spooktacular!

During November, the Club hosted special guest, Montana Poet Laureate, Mark Gibbons via Zoom, and attendees were treated to a reading from his new book, In The Weeds. There were 36 guests in attendance who were entered into a raffle for autographed copies of the book.

The Creative Writing Club is always looking for new members and has an exciting lineup for spring! For more information, contact Professor Jessica Jones, jjones1@kent.edu, or student club leader Jeremiah Harbor, jharbour@kent.edu. We would love to hear from you!

EnviroKents Garden Clean Up + Next Meeting Details

At the end of October, EnviroKents members met up with Dr. Chris Post at Flash's Food Garden to clear the garden beds of the crops from the summer growing season until next spring.

Over the last few years, the produce grown in Flash's Food Garden has been donated to various locations and organizations including Flash's Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels, StarkFresh, and Akron Food Not Bombs.

EnviroKents will also hold a Holiday Happy Hour through Teams on December 8th @ 4:00 PM to wrap up the semester and talk about ideas for spring! Everyone grab your favorite winter drink and let's chat! Contact Jordan Troutman (jtroutm6@kent.edu) for the Teams link.

USG Updates

Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Tour

Last Friday, November 5, the students of Undergraduate Student Government at Kent Stark had the opportunity to tour the Stark County Campus of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank in Downtown Canton.

During the tour, the members of USG were able to see the entirety of the facility, including community rooms and designated meeting space, a demonstration kitchen with a common area, the stockroom, and the Keith D. Monda Family Food Pantry.

This new facility was developed with the purpose of providing the community with consistent access to healthy, nutritious food while simultaneously connecting the community to local resources and each other. Further, the new site of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank allows many of their community partners, including Flash's Food Pantry, easier and closer access to the resources they provide.

Stark and Trumbull USG Collaboration

The students of Undergraduate Student Government at Kent Stark and Kent Trumbull held a virtual meeting recently in order to get to know one another, exchange ideas, and come up with a few ways to collaborate on upcoming initiatives. The Stark USG team welcomed USG Trumbull to the Stark campus on November 12 for an interactive tour and a collaborative meeting.
