Unami United
September 11, 2017
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
Unami students had a fantastic return to school! Students quickly adjusted to our wonderful new middle school schedule, experiencing additional exploratory electives, an everyday advisory period, and a 50-minute every other day resource period. Some of the snapshots you will see in this newsletter spotlight the many ways in which students dove into their first week back at school!
We are looking forward to seeing 7th grade parents at our first Back-to-School Night this Wednesday, September 13th, beginning in the auditorium with a presentation from administration. All 7th grade students received a letter and schedule to take home to share with their parents today. Please ask your child for this paperwork as it will help you tremendously in navigating the building on Wednesday night. Our second BTSN, for 8th and 9th grade students, will occur on Tuesday, September 19.
We hope you enjoy a few of the highlights from our 1st week!!!
Unami United,
Mrs. Lang
Principal
Back To School Nights: September 13 & 19 Begins in Auditorium at 6:30 PM
7th Grade: September 13
8th & 9th Grades: September 19
This is an excellent opportunity to meet your child's teachers, walk their schedule, and receive a brief introduction to our course curricula and classroom expectations.
Please plan to arrive at Unami early to ensure that you are seated in our auditorium no later than 6:30pm. At that time, there will be a welcome from administration, along with some generalized information from our school. This year we are doing things a little differently for our "specials" classes. We will be conducting a "Specials Open House" during your child's elective periods. This will afford the opportunity for parents to explore the many special area classes their children will experience during the school year. Please see the schedule below for 7th grade!
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at our Back-To-School Nights!
FRESHMAN HOUSE
GETTING TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER
Although it was not easy, the 8th grade Team Legacy students did a good job of keeping up with Mrs. Canfield in an old-fashioned game of "Simon Says". Legacy teachers reinforced the importance of being part of a team and reviewed some of the activities they would be participating in this year to build that sense of "team belonging", beginning with Legacy small student lunches that will begin this coming Friday!
STEM CHALLENGE
Spanish Dialogues
Introducing "Canvas"
7th grade Innovation & Creativity
ADVISORY TEAMBUILDING
BOOK LOVE MONDAYS
Please encourage your child to explore different topics and genres! Please click here to read the district's reading letter that supports this goal.

WHO WANTS TO BE LINKED IN UNITY?!
Throughout the year, and especially in Unami United Advisory, we support our students as they learn to find their voice and "stand up" for themselves and others. Once our students leave Unami and go on to CB South High School, building student advocacy is continued and broadened through a program called "First LINK." As a part of LINK's service outreach, those South students work with our Unami students to foster community building and servant leadership. We call this "Link to Unity" or L2U for short.
We will have our first L2U on Saturday, November 11th for all interested 8th and 9th graders who have not been linked before. To receive an invitation to L2U, students (or parents, guardians, teachers) need to fill out a quick nomination form. We will send invitations based on nominations in late October. That means we need nominations by October 20. Students who return the signed permission form first will be the ones who are admitted to L2U.
L2U starts at 8:30 and ends at 11 a.m. Being that it is an action and learning packed two-and-a half hours, students must commit to attending the entire session (no leaving early). Participation is free and student participants get a L2U t-shirt at the end.
