WBSD Update

A weekly update from the West Bloomfield School District

June 19, 2020 - Have a Great Summer!

We'd like to thank every single member of Team WB for making the 2019-20 a success. The year may not have played out like we initially planned but in the face of an unprecedented set of challenges, our school community continued to push the envelope on what was possible through remote instruction and innovated at every turn. We thank you all for your commitment, persistence and support while we blazed this new trail together.

Please take this time over summer break to recharge your batteries and sharpen the saw. There are a lot of unknowns looking ahead so we need to make sure we are taking care of ourselves and each other as we move ahead.

Be on the look out for these updates throughout the summer as we continue to plan for the 2020-21 school year and beyond. Our website and social media feeds are great ways to stay informed in the summer months as well.

Have a great summer Team WB, you've earned it.

Michigan Week Awards Ceremony - June 24

Michigan Week Awards are a revered 48 year old tradition in Greater West Bloomfield, saluting individuals who make volunteer service a priority and dedicate themselves to furthering the common good. This year, the Michigan Week Awards celebrate Milestones and New Visions, observing anniversaries of our schools, our county, and many organizations as well as looking forward to new innovations within the community.

The 2020 Michigan Week Awards will be Megacast on Civic Center TV, Channel 15 and AT&T Channel 99 on June 24, 2020 at 7:00 pm, hosted by Brooke Allen.

This presentation will be available on the CCTV website https://civiccentertv.com/ both Live and On Demand as well.

Drive-In for Justice - June 30

West Bloomfield High School is hosting a special Drive-In for Justice event on June 30. The event starts at 6 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. This collaborative event is being organized with assistance from the West Bloomfield School District, the West Bloomfield Township Police Department, the West Bloomfield Township Clerk’s office, Civic Center TV, and more.

The purpose of the event is to bring awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement to West Bloomfield and to unite the community to create change. The event will also serve as a fundraiser for the Equal Justice Initiative, a non-profit organization, based in Montgomery, Alabama, that provides legal representation to prisoners who may have been wrongly convicted of crimes, poor prisoners without effective representation, and others who may have been denied a fair trial. Donations benefiting the Equal Justice Initiative are being accepted via Cash App and Venmo at $driveinforjustice.

TCA releases survey results

Tri-County Alliance released the results of a statewide poll of parents of K-12 students that sought to gauge their concerns surrounding returning their kids to in-class learning this fall.

You can see the full results of the poll here: TCA K-12 Survey

This poll will help TCA continue to stress the urgency behind getting a 2020-2021 budget put together that provides the resources our schools need to safely reopen this fall.

Abbott Musicians Recognized

The Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association recently announced the awarding of the prestigious “MSBOA Scholar Instrumentalist Award” to Abbott Middle School students: Alesha Tariq and Alexander Li. This award is meant to recognize those young musicians who achieve both academically and musically.

Alesha was nominated by Abbott Orchestra Director Lynn Brosnan and Alexander was nominated by Abbott Band Director Karl Stein for their outstanding accomplishments in music and academics. Member schools are only allowed one nomination in each area, each year, making this a very outstanding accomplishment.

Summer Facilities Update

Our West Bloomfield School District school playgrounds are now open to the general community following the Oakland County Health Division’s announcement this week. Visitors are still required to practice social distancing (six feet apart), wear a face covering, and frequently wash hands/use hand sanitizer.

The WBSD does NOT plan to regularly disinfect the playgrounds, so the playgrounds and equipment will be used at the individual’s own discretion and risk.

The usual summer outdoor athletic field procedures are now reinstated and outdoor facilities are open. Please practice social distancing (six feet apart), wear a face covering, and frequently wash hands/use hand sanitizer.

Sunshine Award 2020

The Sunshine Award dates back to 1988 and was created in memory of WBHS graduate Jill Freedman who lost her life to leukemia. Jill's parents initiated this award to honor their daughter's memory. Her parents want to honor two outstanding incoming seniors who possess characteristics that Jill embodied. These characteristics are a sense of decency, a positive attitude, a zest for life, and knowing the value of strong friendships. Jill was also honest, trustworthy, understanding, showed humility and had a strong willingness to share.

The award is determined based on nominations and voting from the West Bloomfield High School staff. Please join us in congratulating this year's award recipients: Sage Golden and Audrey Gunawan.

Support the WBEF Today!

Now, more than ever, West Bloomfield School District needs YOUR support! In honor of our graduating class of 2020, we are humbly requesting donations to our 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation in order to support our community’s school district.

Please help us honor this year’s senior class and those who will be continuing their education next fall by visiting www.WBEF.org and clicking on MAKE A DONATION.

All donations are used to fund grants for enhanced learning and providing district staff with a source of funding. These funds are used to assist them in planning, developing and implementing innovative technology, academic tools, and art programs for which funds are not available through WBSD.

Visit https://www.wbef.org/educator-grant-program/ for details on the $200,000 WBEF has raised and donated to the district and how those funds were used.

Thank you to all the WBSD families for your continues support. We look forward to spearheading the effort to keep our children learning at a high level despite these challenging times.
