Why Teenagers Are Becoming ‘Trans-curious’
The Story: A new study published in the medical journal Pediatrics finds many more teens than previously thought say they are transgender or identify themselves using other nontraditional gender terms.
The Background: In the United States, an estimated 0.6 percent of adults identify as transgender. Previous studies estimated the number was slightly higher for teens aged 13 to 17—0.7 percent.
But according to CBS News, this latest study estimates that nearly 3 percent of teens are transgender or gender nonconforming, meaning they don’t always self-identify as the sex they were assigned at birth. That includes kids who refer to themselves using neutral pronouns like “them” instead of “he” or “she.”
If these new estimates are correct, it means that young people are 329 percent more likely than adults to identify as transgender, and that there are almost as many transgender teens as there are adult men and women who identify as gay and lesbian.

5 Leaders Every Youth Ministry Needs
Most of us have an image in our minds of the ideal youth leader. Maybe when you think about youth ministry in your church, you imagine the cool college student or the attractive young married couple as best suited to spend time with teenagers. But raising our young people in the faith is meant to be a shared calling among all of God’s people.
If younger Christians are to imitate the faith of their leaders, they will need more than one type of adult in their lives to model faith in a range of callings. This means we may need to re-envision our ideas about what constitutes the ideal youth leader.
Here are five leaders I’m always hoping to recruit for our youth ministry team.
- The Parent of a Current Student
- The Stay-at-Home Parent
- The Recent Empty-Nester
- The Grandparent Figure
- The Single Person

FBISD: I know i've mentioned this to some of you but the more i'm involved in youth ministry, there are so many things I need to learn and it is a never-ending journey of growth. I'm continued and still convinced the the Church has the keys to the good news and it is the Church that must do its part in sharing this Gospel with a broken and hurting world. This Gospel is the only means of salvation for teenagers and families today. I will never waiver from that understanding.
But as we are faithfully equipping the saints from the Church side, we must engage the culture and step into the conversations and do whatever we can for the flourishing of society. And our students spend the bulk of their time in the schools. Their attention is on school, their hopes and dreams for a lot of them are planted in the process of education and college, and just a lot of emotional and physical capital is given to the school. I, for one, never want to play the church vs. school game because I don't think it's either or. But I want to get involved in such a big piece of our students' lives.
So i've been wondering how in the world are we able to not only shepherd our student's on the weekends from a spiritual side but also meet them where they are at on the school side? So for a few months now i've been setting up appointments and meeting with the FBISD leadership and just starting to have conversations with them.
Here are a few takeaways:
1. Their heart is really about the whole of the student not just academics. If you haven’t already familiarize yourself with the “profile of a graduate” and you’ll see what they are aiming for
2. They want and desire faith based collaboration. They are really open to sit down with y’all and hear from you about your experience and your students and what you’ve seen. They are open to having us at the schools and being a support to the students and staff.
3. Biggest need across the board is counselors and those who can speak and listen to the student.
4. They have a ton of initiatives from both student and administrators that pretty much deal with everything a youth leaders works on. I found most of their stuff on the website and these are the things we can get our churches involved in.
5. They are in similar ways constantly doing research on teens, culture, and counseling. I spoke for awhile about all the research I’ve done and a lot of it was new to them so whatever we can supply them with they would appreciate it.
My hopes is that CBC Youth can play a pivotal part in partnering with schools and districts. That we can help shape the culture of the schools and give resources to the schools, its teachers and counselors, and help the community flourish. My hope is that we can use all of our training and resources to give back to the schools so that they can engage their students and direct them towards help and growth. This is a big task but imagine what it could do...not just for our students and families, but for the city!
