Kelly Newsletter

PRINCIPAL PRESS
Dear Kelly Families~
A huge SHOUTOUT goes to the Kelly PTO for all their work in planning and organizing our first
Read-a-thon. Our student’s excitement about reading has been evident and the response to
this event has been incredible. It is amazing that this fundraiser has brought in over $30,000.
Thank you to our Kelly families and community!
As a school we will be honoring three retiring Kelly School staff members. Mrs. Fiedler leaves us after teaching our students for 47 years. She has made a tremendous impact on so many
students over the years and her passion for music education will be greatly missed. Mrs. Hill,
our speech language pathologist, will be making more time for her grandchildren as she leaves us after 31 years. Our students loved their time with Mrs. Hill and we appreciated all the ways she made a difference for our students and school. In kindergarten, Mrs. Hillebrand is retiring after 23 years in the district. Her dedication, love and patience were always evident as she spent her days with our youngest students. It is hard to see these three amazing educators go, but we wish them joy and happiness on their retirement journey. Thank you to these ladies for their devotion to our students and school. They will all be greatly missed!
The month of May will be busy as teachers work to wrap up lessons, administer yearend
assessments and make time for celebrating all that has been accomplished during the year. We thank you all for partnering with us during the school year and appreciate your support through the pandemic challenges.

If your student plans on returning to Kelly School please make sure you complete the registration process in the Parent PowerSchool Portal. This needs to be done for every child-new or returning.
How do I get started?
If you have not already done so, you will need to create a PowerSchool Single Sign-On Account that links all your school-age children to the same account. If you need the information to set up your account, please contact the school office.
Visit https://grand-forks.ps.state. nd.us/public/ and log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal. From the Parent Portal:
Select the student you wish to register at the top.

For schools that have bus routes, parent(s)/guardian(s) will be able to sign up for regular route busing for the 2022-2023 school year while completing registration in PowerSchool. There is an August 10, 5 p.m. deadline for registration for transportation. Dietrich Bus Service will contact those who sign up in mid-August with specific information. Those who miss the deadline will not be guaranteed immediate ridership. If you complete the signup and require a change to your information at a later date, please contact your respective schools’ administration staff to update any information.
Individuals requesting transportation beyond August 10 will be required to utilize the signup on the Grand Forks Public Schools website, which will be active on August 11. Registration using that process will not guarantee immediate ridership.
END OF YEAR MEDICATION PICKUP
All medications need to be picked up by June 3rd. Medications cannot be sent home with the child. Any medication not picked up by the deadline will be appropriately discarded by the school nurse.
A FEW REMINDERS
701-746-2265-school office
Telephone Calls: Calls do not ring into the classroom during school hours to minimize interruptions. Messages for students can be left on the teacher’s voicemail.
Peanut/Nut Free School: When sending a snack or packing a lunch, please remember to check labels to make sure it does not contain or have traces of peanuts/nuts.
Birthday Snacks: Due to the increase of students who have severe food allergies and the higher levels of severity, we no longer celebrate student birthdays with a “birthday snack” in our schools. Parents are welcome to find other non-food items to send to school if they wish. Please discuss with your child’s classroom teacher for ideas or preferences.
Arrival:
The first bell rings at 8:20 am. School begins at 8:25 am. Breakfast is offered 7:40-8:15 am. All students coming to breakfast must use door 16. Students not coming for breakfast should arrive between 8:15 and 8:20 am.
Dismissal: The safety of our students is a top priority for us at Kelly School. As per district policy, schools will have parents meet their child(ren) at a designated location outside the school at dismissal time.
• Teachers will bring their students to a location outside the school at their assigned door. Students will meet their parents or person picking them up at a prearranged meeting place near the assigned dismissal door.
• Older siblings meet the youngest sibling at youngest sibling’s assigned door.
• Bus/Daycare van students will walk through the school to Door #1 to board their bus or van.
PARENTS LEAD
An advantage to getting to know the parents/guardians of your child's friends is that you will know the kind of people that are influencing your child. Also, by getting to know their families, you can verify your child's statements when he or she says, "All my friends get to do it." Most importantly, connecting with the families of your child's friend will help form a safety net for your child because you can help supervise each other's children and look out for their safety. It is common in small towns for everyone to know everyone even through generations! Here are several ways you meet other families: set playdates, arrange to share driving for after-school activities, volunteer at your child's school, join PTO, attend community activities, attend sporting events or other social gatherings, etc.
SAFE KIDS
Safe Kids Grand Forks will be visiting with our students this month about the importance of riding safely in the car. Here are some quick tips they have to share:
- All children under 13 years of age should sit in the back seat—away from frontal airbags.
- Children under 8 years of age legally need to be in a booster seat. Most will need one until 4’9” to fit correctly in an adult seat belt. (Usually 9-11 years old)
- Children under 5 years old should be in a harnessed car seat as they are generally not mature enough to sit in a booster seat correctly.
If you have questions about your current car seat/booster seat or are in need of a new one, please reach out to Safe Kids Grand Forks at safekids@altru.org or 701.780.1489
