Greetings, Pioneer Families!

Thank you so much for attending our Back to School Night(s)! Whether you attended your child’s Back-to-School Night at Day Middle or BES, I’m thankful you were able to attend to learn about your child’s teacher’s goals for your child(ren) and their excitement and hopes for the new school year. Our teachers truly believe that you are education partners whom we don’t take for granted as we all work towards the same goal- empowering and increasing the success of our Pioneers.

We have another parent night I would love for you to consider attending. This year we are continuing our work with a Growth Mindset and the Power of Yet! We are excited to invite you, our Pioneer Parents, to share in an evening of fun for the whole family on Wednesday, September 14th from 6:00-7:00 PM for a live, in-person Growth Mindset presentation specifically created to instill a Growth Mindset at home. Dr. Blake Brandes will share fun and powerful strategies to help you and your child feel happier, less stressed out, and more successful.

Dr. Blake Brandes will also be joining our students in person on Wednesday, September 14th for a fun and engaging assembly about the Growth Mindset. Dr. Brandes is a TEDx speaker, America’s Got Talent performer and Marshall Scholar who has spoken to more than 350,000 students, parents, and educators around the world. During the presentation, our students will learn how to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams by choosing a Growth Mindset!

I hope you will partner with us and plan to join us to learn more about what it means to have a Growth Mindset!

I'm pleased to announce that we are welcoming back our Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program to BES! There are many benefits to this program. First, students gain another positive male role model at school. BES also gains an extra set of eyes and ears which can increase a sense of security for students and staff. Watch D.O.G.S. spend meaningful time in the school setting and gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their child(ren)'s life.

We are looking forward to having this great program back on our campus! If you'd like more information, check out our Watch D.O.G.S. section below in our "Important Information", and be sure to join us for our kick-off orientation on Thursday, September 8th from 6:30-7:30 PM in our library.

Hot Weather Guidelines

The weather is going to warm up this week! Please be sure your child has a water bottle and is dressed appropriately for the weather!

The hot weather guidelines, established by TVUSD, which all school sites follow, can be found here.

Family Handbook

Each year we publish important information and resources for parents and students. Please familiarize yourself with these procedures. If you have any questions that are not covered in the handbook, please do not hesitate to reach out to a member of our administration. Click here to access the BES Family Handbook updated Board Civility Policy.

Daily Breakfast and Lunch

Beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, our nutrition department is offering every student a free breakfast and free lunch each school day!

Please be mindful recesses do not start until 10:25 - if your student has the opportunity to eat breakfast at home, that would be best. The breakfasts offered at recess are a second opportunity to eat, if the student is unable to eat at home. Thank you!

If your student requires specialized meals per a medical condition, please reach out to Amanda Shears at to coordinate meals.

Classroom Volunteers

We love our volunteers! Provided below are a few easy links to help get you started:

  1. Complete an application online. You can find it here: ONLINE APPLICATION**
  2. Submit the required documents: Picture ID, Code of Conduct, Megan's Law documentation.

Additionally, volunteers are to provide:

  • Proof of a Negative TB Test
  • Proof of COVID 19 vaccination or negative Covid test (weekly before volunteer assignment)

For those that are not vaccinated, they can be cleared to volunteer by submitting a negative COVID test. The test must be from a verified healthcare facility and must be dated within 7 days of your volunteer day. TVUSD can provide COVID-19 testing free of charge to our parent community members. Please contact Health Services to schedule an appointment via email: or at 951.294.6050.

Please know that TVUSD, in accordance with guidelines and mandates from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is mandated to collect either a) proof of vaccination or b)present a recent COVID-19 test prior to a volunteer event.

Your documents will be filed in a secure manner. For any questions or concerns related to the volunteer requirements, including the mandated required documents to be collected, please email

COVID Protocols

We are starting the school year with updated guidelines from the school district:

A positive test needs to quarantine for 5-10 days. Please report the result to the school site. The student can test after day 5. If the student is symptom free (no medication)for the previous 24 hours and negative, they can return to school on day 6.

If your student is a direct exposure, please reference the quarantine guidelines here attached for each scenario. If your student tests positive, please report the result to the school site and be prepared to share date of symptom onset and date of positive test. Thank you!

The school district received a large shipment of OTC Covid tests and we have them here on campus. If you are in need of an over the counter rapid test at any time, the school is happy to provide one for your student. Please call the front office at (951) 296-5579.

Watch D.O.G.S. Program

WATCH D.O.G.S. ® (Dads Of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative.

There are 2 primary goals of the WATCH D.O.G.S. ® program.

  1. To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
  2. To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security. WATCH D.O.G.S.® began in 1998 in a single school in Springdale, Arkansas and has since grown into a nationally recognized program that has brought hundreds of thousands of fathers and father figures into the school classrooms and hallways across the country, creating millions of hours of “in school” volunteer time and having a tremendously positive impact on the educational process.

Program Benefits

  • Students gain positive male role models.
  • Schools gain an extra set of eyes and ears. The presence of a father or father figure will provide an additional deterrent to bullying, enhance a sense of security in the building, and will help to create an environment conducive to learning.
  • Fathers get a glimpse of their students’ everyday world and learn about the increasingly complex challenges and decisions today’s youth are facing. As a result, they can learn to relate better to their student and hopefully connect with them.
  • Fathers gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their child’s life in three critical areas including: academic performance, self-esteem, social behavior.
  • The WatchDOGS volunteers provide real and important help for the teachers and the students.

For more information on what being a Watch DOG entails click here.

Who are WatchDOGS (Dads of Great Students)?

WatchDOGS are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year. During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. On the day of their participation, WatchDOGS are given a brief review of their involvement and they wear an official WATCH D.O.G.S. ® t-shirt.
