Friday Flyer
Second Grade
Dear Parents,
We celebrated the end our study of the Pacific Northwest Native people last week by trading bear masks created by the children and sampling smoked salmon on crackers, salmon dip, and fresh berries. This week, we started learning about the landscape of the Arctic and that it is not always covered with snow and ice!
The children finished writing their creative writing assignment "The Woman Who Married A Frog," inspired by a Pacific Northwest tale. Some are excited to read their stories aloud in class!
Please continue practicing addition and subtraction facts at home, whether it's by using flash cards, math apps on an iPad, or just calling out a problem while you're driving your child to school. We are hoping that they recall their facts more speedily to help with future double and triple digit addition and subtraction problems.
As announced two weeks ago, there is an upcoming event at the National Museum of the American Indian that may be of interest to you. "Winter Blast: A Family Weekend of Native Games" takes place on January 27-28, from 10:30 am - 5:00 pm. The games teach important skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and eye-hand coordination. Jeremy Red Eagle (Sisseton Wahpeton) of the International Traditional Games Society will be sharing these games of intuition and chance played in his community.
Finally, we welcomed Miss Kerin, our student teacher from Catholic University, this week. We are so pleased to have her working with us twice a week this semester!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Emilia and Rachel
