COVID-19 Updates
Free COVID-19 Test KitsWe are excited to announce that West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) is now offering COVID-19 test kits to students who request them. These free test kits are provided through Test Iowa, a program offered through the Iowa Department of Public Health and the State of Iowa Hygienic Lab. From now through the end of the calendar year, these test kits will be prioritized for students based on availability. We will consider expanding availability to WDMCS employees in 2022. | Vaccinations Available for Children 5+The CDC officially approved COVID-19 pediatric vaccine for children ages 5 and up. COVID-19 pediatric vaccinations will also be available through health care providers and pharmacies. If you have questions or want to schedule an appointment, please contact your child's health care provider. | When Will Mask Requirements End? With the news of vaccinations now available for most WDMCS students, some are wondering when face mask requirements will end. As a reminder, WDMCS adjusted its Return-to-Learn plan on Sept. 20, 2021, based on a federal court ruling, which banned Iowa school districts from issuing mask mandates. This adjusted plan will remain in place until the end of the first semester unless brought back to the WDMCS Board of Education with recommended changes. What Could Cause a Change in Face Mask Requirements?
Because WDMCS cannot require families to share if their students are vaccinated, we will not be able to base our decisions on the percentage of students who receive the vaccine. |

What Could Cause a Change in Face Mask Requirements?
- If the federal court's ruling is reversed and Iowa school districts are no longer allowed to issue mask mandates
- If central Iowa's COVID-19 positivity rate sharply declines over a period of time
- If the WDMCS positivity rate remains at a declined rate
Because WDMCS cannot require families to share if their students are vaccinated, we will not be able to base our decisions on the percentage of students who receive the vaccine.

REMINDER: 2021-22 Plan for "Snow Days"
WDMCS is returning to our pre-COVID plan for "snow days" in 2021-22. We will NOT have school on days if we need to close due to inclement weather. This means we will NOT transition to online learning on those days.
WILL THIS IMPACT STUDENTS WHO ARE ALREADY LEARNING ONLINE THROUGH EDGENUITY?
Students learning online through Edgenuity work independently and can choose whether or not they wish to complete work on a no school day.
HOW WILL WE FIND OUT IF WE DON'T HAVE SCHOOL?
As we have in previous years, the district will send out mass notifications to all WDMCS employees and families. This includes a voicemail, email, text, and WDMCS app notification.
If you did not update your contact information when going through our annual enrollment process this summer, please log into Infinite Campus and make sure we have your current email and phone numbers.
WHAT ABOUT LATE STARTS OR EARLY DISMISSALS?
There will not be any changes to our processes from previous years if we need to start late or dismiss early due to weather or other emergencies.
WILL WE NEED TO MAKE UP A SNOW DAY?
We do not have extra days built into our calendar to compensate for potential snow days. However, because we count the total number of instructional hours instead of days, it is possible we could have extra hours at the end of the school year. If that happens, we may not need to make up a snow day. The Board of Education approves whether or not snow days need to be made up.
