Day of Service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
A parent shared this opportunity for our students...
This would become our annual Day of Service, when at least once a year we bring together students from across communities so that they may get to meet new peers and learn from one another. Since 2017 it has grown it over 200, and in 2019 we hope to bring together over 500 students. While we began in Bergen County, we hope to expand to more communities in the future to create an informed, accepting, and united generation. The goal is to encourage discussions and friendships, and to promote the understanding that our similarities are greater than our differences. We want kids to get to know their peers by working together on community minded service projects, in the hopes that they will see that we are all a part of one.
This Monday, January 21st, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, would be an opportunity to get involved. Please see their website for more information.
No Name-Calling Week
“No Name-Calling Week” I January 21st through January 25th this year.
No Name-Calling Week was inspired by the popular young adult novel entitled The Misfits by popular author James Howe. The book tells the story of four best friends trying to survive the seventh grade in the face of all too frequent taunts based on their weight, height, intelligence, and sexual orientation/gender expression. The friends create a new political party during student council elections and run on a platform aimed at wiping out name-calling of all kinds. The No-Name Party in the end, wins the support of the school's principal for their cause and their idea for a "No Name-Calling Day" at school.
Motivated by this simple, yet powerful, idea, the No Name-Calling Week Coalition created by GLSEN and Simon & Schuster Children's publishing, consisting of over 60 national partner organizations, organized an actual No Name-Calling Week in schools across the nation. Since then, No Name-Calling Week has been adopted by schools everywhere and has grown into one of the largest bullying-prevention initiatives in the country.
The Helping Hands Club, Student Ambassadors and the Counseling Department will be participating in No Name Calling Week with a variety of activities, such as a Positive Post-It Project and reading poems during morning announcements.
