SUMMER NEWSLETTER
Congratulations to all of our students on another successful year at Fulton Science Academy Private School! Wow! We are very proud of our students; they worked extremely hard and accomplished so much. We are especially proud because our students represented the state of Georgia in seven different national and international events during the past school year, breaking all prior records. We are definitely a small school with a VERY BIG HEART!
We are pleased to inform you that we anticipate having approximately 540 students and 68 faculty members at FSA next year. For the first time in our private school's history, we will welcome two ninth-grade, two tenth-grade, and one eleventh-grade class during the 2017-18 year. As we add 12th grade during the following year, we will complete all offerings from pre-K through high school.
Our faculty would also like to acknowledge the incredible parent support that defines our school. We have such an amazing group of parents here at FSA! The events organized for our students and faculty by the Mustang Support Organization (MSO) surpassed all expectations. Without the support of our wonderful parents, our school wouldn't be this special! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
As we usher in summer, we will continue our weekly newsletters. Please look for one each Monday during the summer break. Newsletters provide a nice way to keep our family and friends abreast of all that is happening here at FSA.
In this issue, you'll find some snapshots of end-of-year festivities, as well as some pointers about next year, including dates and uniform information.
On behalf of everyone here, HAPPY SUMMER!
With Warmest Regards,
Kenan Sener

National ARML High School Math Competition
At GCTM’s State High School Math Competition on April 29th, three students from Fulton Science-Academy High School Math Olympiad Team (Charlie F., Holden W. and Vishaal R.) qualified to National level and were invited to represent Georgia at 2017 National ARML Math Competition in June 2017.
In all, about 140+ teams participated at the 42nd Annual ARML Competition that was held on June 2nd and June 3rd, 2017. Every team consists of 15 students, high school age or lower. Each state brings three to six teams to Nationals. Georgia participated in division B with three teams. Georgia teams met every Sunday in May and practiced as a team.
The American Regions Mathematics League's annual competition brings together the nation's finest students. They meet, compete against, and socialize with one another, forming friendships and sharpening their mathematical skills. Since its inception in 1976, ARML has snowballed, burgeoned, and mushroomed into a national program, involving almost 2000 students and teachers from almost every state. Simply put, ARML is the World Series of mathematics competitions. The contest is written for high school students, although some exceptional junior high students attend each year. The competition consists of several events, which include a team round, a power question (in which a team solves proof-oriented questions), an individual round, two relay rounds (in which a contestant solves a problem and passes his/her answer to another team member, who uses this answer to solve another problem), and a super relay.
THE EVENT The annual American Regions Math League (ARML) competition always takes place during the Friday and Saturday following Memorial Day. It is held simultaneously at four locations: Penn State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Georgia and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Scores are managed on live database over these 4 locations.
On Saturday June 3rd 2017, Holden W. (8th grade) represented Georgia in B division (B1 team). Charlie F. (9th grade) and Vishaal R. (8th grade) represented GA in B division (B2 team). Both teams of Georgia placed in top 7 in the nation among more than 140 teams in division B. Additionally, B1 team placed 2nd and B2 team placed 7th in the nation. Well done! We are so proud of our high school math team students and can't wait to see what they will go on to accomplish in the future! Way to go Math Mustangs!

FSA Robotics Team Continues UK Tournament Preparations
Fulton Science Academy would like to thank John Copenhaver, CEO of TornadoAlert, who presented a $10,000 sponsorship check to Coach Kaya and members of the team. This gift brings the team within $5,000 of their overall fundraising goal.
Also visiting the team was Jeff Rosen, state FLL chair and head of robotics and CEISMC at Georgia Tech University. Together, these caring mentors provided valuable feedback as team members make final adjustments to both their project and their robot.
Mr. Copenhaver commented, "I want these young ladies to know that local, innovative companies stand behind them as they represent our wonderful state against more than 1,000 of the world's brightest robotics minds in Bath this month. To be able to support their journey is a very rewarding feeling; students like these are our hope for the future. I would encourage others to please step forward to support this team and this amazing school."

New FSA Video Recaps An Incredible STEAM Day
FIRST GRADERS CREATE INCREDIBLE GARDEN FOR THEIR STEAM PROJECT
In the spring, first graders at FSAPS learned about living and non-living things. They also learned about plants and animals and their needs. Students were expected to know the parts of a plant and how a plant gets what it needs to survive.
For students' first grade STEAM project, teachers wanted to create a garden that would allow students to see the parts of a plant, experience some of its life cycle, and take ownership of the well-being of the garden.
Students voted about which plants to put in the garden. Mrs. Whitlock's class planted carrots, green beans, and corn, while Ms. Fuchs' class added peas and lima beans. A student in Ms. Fuchs' class also contributed radishes from her own garden at home.
Once students decided which plants to grow, they researched the plants' needs and then formulated questions to ask docents during the students' Atlanta Botanical Gardens field trip.
After spring break, students put seeds into plastic baggies with wet paper towels and hung them up on their classroom windows to observe how a seed starts to grow. Students made observations in their garden journals as they grew.
After the seeds began to grow roots, stems, and even some leaves, classes transplanted them to decomposable seed planters and continued observing them.
As the seedlings continued to grow, we purchased a rolling garden container. Students had scoped out the areas around our school to find a place with good sun for our plants, and we realized there was a little nook right outside of the classrooms that would be a perfect place! Students mixed potting soil, added garden lime and fertilizer, and transplanted our little seedlings.
Classes created signs for the STEAM garden and hung them up on class windows to make their experiment enjoyable by all!
Over the weekend, however, the wind sun-blanched some of the plants and bent some of the green bean stalks. Students broke up into small groups to create prototypes to help support the bean plants using items they had in the classroom. They shared with the class why they could be helpful, and set them in our garden. It was definitely a work in progress. Students learned that things don't always go as planned, but it provided so many unique opportunities for students to embrace a new dimension of learning.

Summer Workbook Option
Many parents have asked for recommendations of practice books for your students to stay sharp over the summer months...
The Summer Skills Books include two different series of review books (math and language arts) for students from pre-k through high school. The foreign language series and Study Skills Sharpener book are for students in the 7th grade through high school. Each grade level book helps students maintain their academic skills over the summer months. Since their introduction in 1991, these books have benefited millions of students in over 20,000 schools nationwide.
Please visit http://www.summerskills.com/books for more information on how to order!
