HERSHEY NOTES
FEBRUARY 16, 2018
FROM THE DESK OF MRS. FIELDS
Happy belated Valentine’s Day! Students were all smiles during their Valentines exchange! Our office was showered by Valentines as well! Thank you so much for thinking of us! These special cards present a wonderful learning opportunity for our younger students. Why not have your child read the message on a few cards each evening? If your child stumbles on a word, it is helpful to ask if he or she needs more time or a little help with stretching out the letter sounds before you jump in and read the word. Kids really enjoy doing this! Be sure to check out the party pictures posted below and on our website!
Remember that Round 1 of the ISTEP+ test begins on Monday, February 26. Your child’s teacher has most likely shared their class testing schedule with you. We are so appreciative of all that you do to get your child to school on time, well rested, and fed with a nutritious breakfast each day- and particularly during testing days. These things truly make a difference!
Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the corner; March 12-16. You will receive your invitation on Monday, Feb. 26, 2018.
We love this opportunity to have a personal conversation about how we can work together to help your child.
MISS RIORDAN'S NOTES
I am finishing up reading Mrs. Joyce Gives the Best High Fives to each classroom that introduces what a school counselor does and how I am different from a teacher. It has been a lot of fun learning more about each class and the students during the reading. It has been a refreshing reminder that kids have awesome imaginations! During the month of March, I will be going to each classroom to read a book, Sam's Secret and have a discussion about personal safety and abuse prevention. This book is a part of the radKIDS program, which currently, the 2nd graders are participating in. Because of radKIDS, this sensitive topic is much easier to talk about. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
As you may remember, we just finished raising money for a fundraiser for Riley Children’s Hospital. If a student brought $1 in, they received a tattoo and $2 for a Riley bracelet. We had to order more bracelets because of everyone’s donations! Our goal was to raise $600 and we far surpassed that goal by raising $863.15!! Thank you so much to everyone that contributed and a special thanks to the Ambassador’s Club for brainstorming ways to raise money. They even did a skit on morning announcements depicting the purpose of the fundraiser and how to earn your money to contribute.
SCHOOL SAFETY
The tragedy in Florida reminds us all of the importance of safety and security in schools. Be assured that Hershey has an updated school safety plan. The members of our staff have been trained on the specifics of this plan, and we conduct periodic drills to ensure that everyone knows their role during a crisis. We have specific protocol for entry to our building, and we appreciate the understanding of our parents as we enforce these protocols for the safety of our children. The safety of our students remains our highest priority.
KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP
Roundup is Wednesday, April 11 from 5:15 to 6:45. Parents and incoming kindergartener are invited to attend this informational fun evening.
Contact our office if you have any questions.
Please help spread the word to your friends, family, and neighbors.
YEARBOOK SALES
Order forms for the 2017-2018 Hershey Yearbook were sent home with students today.
Orders with payment are due to the Hershey office by March 2, 2018.
The cost is $13.00.
HERSHEY ROCKS
Don’t forget that you can send a special message to your child by painting, or commissioning the painting, on one of our landscape rocks. The cost to “rent” a rock is $5.00 if you paint it yourself and $10.00 dollars if the Art Leaders paint it for you. Please contact the school office to reserve the rock of your choice. Rocks will be reserved on a first come-first served basis.
FROM THE HERSHEY HEALTH ROOM
The flu bug is still biting! Our custodians and teachers are taking extra precautions to keep surfaces germ free. We could use your help in eradicating this nasty bug by adhering closely to the following corporation policies:
Students with vomiting, diarrhea, undiagnosed skin rashes, eye infections, or fever over 100° should not attend school. Students exhibiting these symptoms at school will be sent home.
Students with vomiting, diarrhea, or fever over 100º should not return to school until the symptoms have resolved without medication for 24 hours.
Students with pink eye may return to school with a doctor’s note when the symptoms subside or when a student shows treatment has begun with appropriate eye drops.
Contagious skin rashes should be reported to your school nurse and a note will be required by your child’s physician to return to school.
FEBRUARY - HABIT OF THE MONTH
Think Win/Win Be sure to talk to your child about how we can use this habit to find a solution that helps everyone win! We are encouraging our students to think about how others will feel with the choices they make. In this way, everyone can be happy!
INtegrate WELLNESS TIP
February is National Heart Health Month! You may be aware that Hershey is a pilot school in our corporation’s wellness program. One of the components of this initiative is to provide 60 minutes of physical education to our students each week. Since Mr. Love is only here three days a week, some teachers are volunteering to teach an additional 30 minutes of physical education skills as time allows. Many classes walk the Panther Pathway whenever possible as well. There is a plethora of research that shows that movement increases one’s ability to focus and retain information. We are also encouraging students to hydrate. With the installation of the water bottle filler in our cafeteria last year, students are better able to drink water throughout the day. Thank you for refraining from bringing fast food when visiting your child for lunch; we appreciate your willingness to work with us in teaching your child healthy habits.
This edition’s Integrate Wellness article appropriately focuses on what you can do to have a healthy heart. (click link below)
