Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
March 12, 2018
A Great Week!
All Third Graders in the state of Indiana are required to take the iREADS test. That test will be given on March 13. There is a day of practice tests (required by the state) on March 12.
EVERY SINGLE STUDENT IN MY CLASS chose to participate in the 3rd Grade March Reading Madness competition. My class was the only one with 100% participation. The Pairing Celebration was a blast! It was so much fun to see the excitement on the students' faces as they received their Reading Partner. I can't wait to post the results on the (very large) brackets on the bulletin board in the 3rd Grade Hallway.
We earned an EXTRA RECESS today by earning our tenth tally mark for quick, efficient transitions between activities.

Things I saw happen in Room 9 this week...
- Great teamwork among all teams as they planned their demonstrations showing their understanding of a concept they learned as we studied "light."
- Evangelin does not settle for giving anything but her BEST! The students were asked to complete a BOXES and BULLETS outline for a non-fiction text. Then, I challenged them to use their outline to write a summary paragraph. It was amazing to watch Evang push herself until it was "just right!"
- Watching Yuvani's enthusiasm toward reading her Boxcar Children books makes me happy! Every day she reports what she read the night before to me. I love it!
- Bridget was such a HARD WORKER this week! She had an attitude of enthusiasm and engagement every single day!
- Austin is showing such confidence. He used to be somewhat shy about asking me questions. These days he approaches me with confidence and a strong belief in himself, his questions, and ideas.
- Jack has made such great decisions for himself during writing. He is focused, working hard, and making great progress on his persuasive writing!
These are just a few of the MANY things I observed! Stay tuned for more...
Don't forget to turn your clocks FORWARD this weekend. This always makes for a rough Monday of school. Wish us luck...
Looking forward to a GREAT week next week!
Enjoy your weekend...

March Birthdays...
Around Room 9...
The bulletin board below is outside the 3rd Grade Pod. It is how we will keep track of the students progress toward the Third Grade March Madness Reading Challenge. When the students saw it, they were very excited! Thank you for your encouragement in helping them read more than they ever have! I had several students walk into Room 9 and happily report they read 100 minutes last night. I talked to the students about this being under the "honor system" so there can be no cheater cheater pumpkin eaters. I trust every single student in my class! Can't wait to see how all 3rd Graders progress over the next 3 weeks!
Special Helper - Griffin
Griff (as I call him) is a great kid. He is a quiet leader and helped me and his classmates as needed this week. Did you know that he is a huge Cubs fan? He and I have conversations about our Cubbies and his favorite sport, baseball, on a regular basis. Griff and his family got a new puppy a few weeks ago. Her name is Jenny. She is part Yorkshire Terrier, so, of course, we have to have talks about our dogs. It's a pleasure to be Griff's teacher!
Here is What is Planned for Next Week: March 12-16
Reading: Reading to Learn: Understanding NON-FICTION text
- Creating an outline for non-fiction text
- Using the outline to write a summary
Writing: YOU CHOOSE!
- Students have five days to finish their "You Choose" writing project. It is due Friday, March 16.
- Students are using their Writer's Checklist to guide them as they write a persuasive, information, or narrative piece.
- Ms. Kremer, Mrs. Clark, and Mrs. Greene are in the classroom during Writer's Workshop. We conference with students and help as needed.
- It's exciting to watch students be proactive and be assertive enough to ask for help!

- Solving number stories with measures
- Fraction number lines
Science: Rocks and Minerals
- We finished our study of Light. Be sure to watch the videos of the students presenting information about one of the topics we studied. I think they did a fantastic job!
