terrible tsunamis
the damage tsunamis can do to the world
tsunamis
I will be talking about tsunamis, how they occur, and how they start. I will also review the damage that a tsunami can do to an island. Tsunamis are a natural disaster that can cause severe damage.
what is a tsunami
A tsunami is a series of enormous waves created by an under water earthquake. A tsunami can move hundreds of miles per hour in an open ocean. From the area where the tsunami originates waves travel in all directions. Once a wave approaches the shore it builds in height. They move very rapidly through deep water, but slow in speed when it hits the shore.
the damage a tsunami can do
A tsunami hit the coast of several countries of South and Southeast China in December 2004. On December 26,2004 at 7:59 am local time an under water earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The most destructive tsunami waves could occur along the coast of California,Oregon,Washington,Alaska, and Hawaii. Drowning is the most common cause of death in a tsunami. A tsunami cannot be prevented but the impact of a tsunami can be mitigated through community preparedness, timely warnings, and effective response. A tsunami can have one wave or it can have a series of waves.
how a tsunami occurs
To start one the ocean floor rises up and makes a big wave. The problem is that these plates move, very slowly. A landslide can also start a tsunami. The earths crest can shift a huge volume of water that will start a tsunami. The earth is made up of a dozen pieces that fit together a bit like a jigsaw puzzle it is like this because the earth can shift which will cause a tsunami.
a summary
So we learned that tsunamis can be very dangerous to the earth and islands. That they all start with a landslide or an under water earthquake. They can have large waves or a series of waves. The waves can reach up to two hundreds miles an hour. Tsunamis can hurt people and the earth a lot but we cannot do anything about it, we just need to be prepared for one at all times, like stay away from beaches when they do occur and get to high ground like at a mountain.
