The Washington Weekly
November 27, 2023
Greetings Washington Families,
I hope this message finds you well and that you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving break with your loved ones. As we welcome our students back to another exciting week of learning and growth, I wanted to highlight some important upcoming events.
We are thrilled to announce the upcoming Grade Level Spelling Bees, and we encourage parents to click the link below to sign up their children for this experience. Additionally, our Holiday Magic Giving Program is in full swing, providing an opportunity for our school community to support families in need during the holiday season. Please consider participating and spreading the joy of giving.
Don't forget about $5 Friday – an initiative by the PTA to help us reach our Shining Star Fundraiser BIG GOAL of $20,000. Your contribution on Friday, December 1, will go a long way in supporting our school's diverse programs and activities! Thank you for your continued support in making Washington Elementary a great place to teach and learn.
Let's make it a great week at 1000 Fayetteville Street!

Magnet Schools of America Poster Contest 🖼
Want to show off your art skills? Washington will be participating in the Magnet Schools of America Student Poster Contest. Students in grades K-5 are invited to submit a poster for consideration. Submissions must be turned in at school by Wednesday, December 20th. Washington teachers and staff will vote on one submission to submit for Wake County and then the district will decide which elementary entry will go on to the National competition.
Complete this form to let us know that your child will participate.
What styles of artwork are acceptable for submission to the student poster competition?
Magnet Schools of America has received artwork in a variety of media, including watercolor, oils, colored pencils, crayons, markers, charcoal, pastels, photography, and digital art.
Chess Club Interest ♟
In the past, Washington Elementary held a privately run Chess Club with Triangle Chess. The PTA has been hearing input that some families may be interested in enrolling and having their child attend an after-school chess club held at Washington Elementary.
Before we commit with Triangle Chess to have the club, we would first like to gauge interest. Triangle Chess requires at least 12 participants. The cost of the club will be $129 per student for eight weeks. Parents must provide transportation for pickup. The lessons start in January, once a week, however, the days and times have not been finalized yet.
It is our hope that we can bring this club back to Washington, but we would not want to turn a child away for financial reasons. So, if you are able to sponsor another child, please indicate that on the survey.
Thank you for your input and the time for completing this survey. Your response helps us find new and engaging ways to support student growth. The survey deadline is Friday December 1st.
23-24 Spelling Bee
Our grade level spelling bees will take place on December 5 and 6 during the school day. When you sign up using the link below, you'll get an email within 24 hours with the spelling list for the grade level bees. The schoolwide bee will be held January 25 in the evening. Please note that schoolwide spelling bee study lists will NOT be distributed until the grade level bee results are in.
The deadline for signing up will be Tuesday, 11/28/23!
