Historical Society
We had a great walking field trip to the Historical Society. The kids learned a lot about our school's namesake and Shay's contributions to the city of Harbor Springs. Thank you to Mrs. Lauria for walking down with us.
Language Arts
- Reading: We reviewed story structure. Students focused on identifying characters, plot and setting in a fiction story.
- Writing: The students worked on revising and editing their science fiction and realistic fiction stories.
- Grammar: We review comparative and superlative adjectives.
Math
This week we continued to work with fractions and decimals. Students also had fun with geometry. They learned how to determine the measure of an angle separated into parts, and they learned about attributes of various polygons.
Science and Social Studies
- Science: This week we learned about where on Earth mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes happen. We also did a fun experiment about different types of volcanoes and lava. We learned why some volcanoes explode and some the lava just bubbles out slowly.
- Social Studies: This week we had a beautiful day to walk to the Harbor Springs Historical Society. Ms. Cummings taught us all about Ephraim Shay and his inventions and life in Harbor Springs. The students are spending the last few weeks of school researching and completing projects to be displayed at the museum during Shay days this July.

Field Trips - Parent Info
We have our two field trips coming up quickly. We will be going to Taquahmanon Falls on June 2 and Sleeping Bear Dunes on June 9. We will not be returning to Shay until 6:30pm for both field trips. Please let me know if you have any questions. Both of these field trips cover concepts we've learned in science and social studies and are a ton of fun!
Parents, if you are planning to attend one of our field trips in June you need to be sure you've filled out our Volunteer Release Form. If you've already filled one out for the 2015-16 school year you are all set. If you haven't volunteered in the classroom or come on a previous field trip you will need to stop by the office to pick up a form or download one from our school website.

Field Trip - Kid Info
We will be heading to Whitefish Point and Taquahmenon Falls on Thursday, June 2. We will be leaving right at 8am. Students will need to pack a lunch and extra snacks or a dinner, we will not be returning to Shay until 6:30pm. I also recommend kids bring plenty to drink, bug spray, and sunscreen. The bugs are usually pretty bad up there this time of year. Your child will need to be picked up in front of Shay at 6:30pm. Please let me know if you have any questions.

There is spelling, math, and grammar homework coming home this Friday. It will be due next Friday, June 3 because of the field trip on Thursday.
