EXCERPT: Miami Beat: The Secret Society

Prologue

The sound of glass breaking woke Sidney Stevens from a deep slumber. Frightened, she climbed out of bed and put her feet in her slippers. She could hear voices. Familiar voices, but the tone was completely off.

Terrified, she crept out of bed to investigate the noises. She slowly walked out to the living room and watched in horror as her world shattered right in front of her.

Her father’s right hand was gripped tightly around her mother’s throat. Sidney screamed in horror as she watched her father holding her mother in the air, by her throat. Next to them, lay two empty bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Label, her father's favorite whiskey.

Clawing at his arms, her mother tried desperately to break free from his stranglehold. “Stop it!” Sidney screamed at the top of her lungs, praying that her father would let go. Her mother’s beautiful butter pecan complexion was now beet red. It seemed as if her mother, Florence Stevens, was going to die right before her eyes. Sidney didn’t know what to do, but she knew that if she didn’t act fast, her mother would be dead. Luckily, she didn’t have to contemplate her next move for long.

Sidney heard a sudden bang on the door and jumped as five police officers stormed their home. One cop lifted her up in his arms so quickly it felt like she was flying. He sat her in the kitchen as the other cops questioned her father, Randy Stevens, Sr.

Sidney tried to peer around the corner to see what was happening with her parents, but the cop who picked her up began talking to her. “What is your name? How old are you? Tell me what happened,” he asked as she tried to make sense of it all.

Things flew across the room, shattering, as she heard raised voices. Sidney listened to her mother begging for her father’s release. “Let him go!” Florence cried as a wrestling match ensued in the other room.

Suddenly a scream ripped through the air, and Sidney jumped in fear for the second time that night. Running in the living room, she saw her father sprawled on the hardwood floor with four cops kicking him. They pounded on him while one kept repeating to him, “Stop resisting, sir.”

“I’m not resisting,” her father cried. “I didn’t do anything wrong! Get out of my house,” Randy yelled between kicks and pelts. He covered his head and tried to protect his body, but to no avail. They were whooping him as he cried out in pain.

“Where are you taking him?” Florence cried in fear as one of the officers handcuffed her injured husband. “Downtown, Ma’am,” he said as a tall blonde officer with sunburned skin began to read Randy his Miranda rights.

“Do you understand your rights?” the blonde officer questioned after he read Randy his Miranda rights. When Randy didn’t respond, the officer kicked him in the chest. Coughing up blood, her father responded, “Yes” and lowered his head in defeat.

The commotion woke Sidney's brothers, Randy Stevens, Jr. and Cero Stevens, who were holding on to their father for dear life. “Take them in the bedroom Florence!” Randy, Sr. yelled to his inconsolable wife, but Florence couldn’t hear him. She was too busy crying on her knees, praying for God to intervene.

Sidney kissed her father’s forehead and watched as the four officers dragged him away, forever.

BPM: Was there anyone in your career that recognized your talent and helped to cultivate it?

FPB: Yes, I had a Language Arts teacher that loved my creative stories that were required for weekly assignments in school. She encouraged me to journal during middle school to keep up with my writings.

BPM: How do you stay on top of your game professionally in the publishing industry?

FPB: Being that I am new to the game of writing, editing and publishing, I LISTEN, AND OBSERVE the mistakes that have been made and own up to them and I make sure that I don’t repeat them. I use these things as learning tools. So I basically never ever stop learning from anyone.

BPM: Tell us about your first suspense novel. Available on Nook and Kindle?

FPB: My first book is “Miami Beat: The Secret Society” which is a suspense novel based around a Police Department, and some of the individuals who work within and around that department. The characters come to life when you get engrossed in my book. It is available on Nook and Kindle as well as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

The characters from Miami Beat: The Secret Society have returned with drama, in Miami Beat II: Dilemmas, so hot it will have you sweating! As the body count increases, everyone is left wondering, who will be next?

The warm, salty, sea air of Miami blows in change for everyone that Sidney holds dear to her heart. After years of hard work and dedication, Sidney Stevens’ dreams have finally manifested to reality. The Academy extended an offer of a lifetime, and she is prepared to invest everything she has into her future, everything EXCEPT her heart.

Will Spencer trust his lover with his life?

The characters from Miami Beat: The Secret Society have returned with drama so hot it will have you sweating. As the body count increases, everyone is left wondering, who will be next?

BPM: Give us some insight on your main characters from both novels. What makes each one so special?

FPB: My main characters are Sidney Stevens, who is a psychologist that deals with troubled police officers, as well as outside civilians that are first responders. There is also Major Marcus Mystic, who is in charge of the Police Department that is involved with issues that causes this to be suspenseful.

Officer Arturo Garcia, who use to be Sidney Steven’s supervisor when she was a young Police Explorer, and then you have Spencer MacIntyre, who is Sidney’s best friend, and a personal trainer to a lot of the members of the Police Department.

With the main characters mentioned, they are connected with each other, and little do they know that it’s through murder, sex, and money! They each play an integral part for each other to survive this “Secret Society” so they are all special in their own way, but will they all come out unscathed?

BPM: What’s so unique about their story-lines or voice in the stories? What makes each one so special?
FPB: The uniqueness of the story-lines is that each character has real life issues that we all have encountered or know someone that is or has gone through them. The way that they handle their individual problems as you read on, makes them special and unique in the sense that the outcome may not be what we expect, but the issue at hand is challenged and overcome to a degree that the character can function in their day to day activities.

BPM: What are some of the other topics discussed in this book?
FPB: I touch on Domestic Violence, Mental Illness, Alcoholism, Police Brutality, LGBTQ, and Drug Abuse.

BPM: What enticed you to publish your first, sexy, crime thriller series? How long have you been writing?
FPB: I was ready to release the characters from inside of my head, so I decided to put pen to paper and write what was in my head. book two is hotter, and book three will be the hottest! I have been writing books for almost a year now. Yes, I’m a newbie.

BPM: Is there a specific place/space that you find inspiration in?

FPB: I find my inspiration while sitting by the pool. I write from her back yard, listening to the water fall.

BPM: What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

FPB: I enjoy doing the evil things, breaking the law and living on the edge. Being that I have had to be a law abiding citizen for my entire Law Enforcement career, it felt sooooo good to “just do it!”

BPM: Share one specific point in your book that resonated with your present situation.
FPB: My present situation is the closeness that Sidney and Spencer have. They share everything with each other. I based Spencer off of one of my best friends, and we go through a lot. He is the splitting image of Spencer, and we have been to “sizzle” together and he has taken me to the gay bars so that I could really write about the things that Spencer really goes through and the possessive demeanor of Steven, how he acts when he is crushing on Spencer. I really had a blast researching this with him.

BPM: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating this series?
FPB: One of the most if not the most is from the feedback of book one; How many people actually related their own experiences with the scenes and characters in the book. They are highly anticipating book two.

BPM: Do you ever have days when writing is a struggle?
FPB: Oh my gosh….yessss, I have days that I just don’t want to do anything but chill, watch TV and play “Words With Friends” on my phone. Writing is the last thing that I want to do….it’s not often, but it does happen.

BPM: What projects are you working on at the present?
FPB: I am working on a major project right now. I can’t say what it is at this time, but when I get the “nod”, you will be the first to know. I promise you that!

BPM: How much planning goes into writing a book? How long does it take to complete one of your books?

FPB: I am a brand new author that had no experience in writing a book, but when I decided to create my book, I had to bring all of my ideas that were written down on paper together and piece it into something legible, and add the new thoughts onto that and shape it into something that made sense. When you wake up and read what you have, you want to change it again and again.

Planning, organization and preparation are a must. I think once you get organized and decide to go with a final draft, three to four months out, you should have a final product that is ready for editing and publishing. For my book, it was a 4 to 5 month process.

BPM: What advice would you give aspiring writers that would help them finish a project?

FPB: Find someone that is well seasoned in the field of writing, editing, and publishing, and become a sponge. If this is something that you plan on doing more than once, learn all you can from someone who has made this their passion.

BPM: Was there an early experience where you learned that the written word has power?

FPB: No, there was no experience, just something that was instilled in me by my parents.

BPM: How has writing impacted your life?

FPB: I have been able to express myself in many different ways through writing under many disguises. Things I may have always wanted to say but may have not mustered up the nerve to open up, I was able to write it and make an even bigger impact on paper, so it helped me as a person tremendously, writing actually became my voice.

BPM: What does literary success look like to you?

FPB: Literary success to me is seeing my books everywhere, on social media, bookstores, websites, and hearing my characters names as if they were your actual friends, being talked about. Having people request another book from me. Rave reviews, and your name on the tips of avid readers tongues.

BPM: What are the three most effective tools for sharing your books with the world?

FPB: Social media, word of mouth and phenomenal book clubs.

BPM: Share some of your writing goals. What projects are you working on at the present?

FPB: My goals are to get as many followers as I can to create a “Secret Society” and capture them into the literary world of the “Miami Beat”. I am currently working on book two of “Miami Beat: The Secret Society” Bringing my goal closer to a reality with this book, becoming a household name.

BPM: What legacy do you hope to leave future generations of readers with your writing?
FPB: I want everyone to know that every book isn’t a fairy-tale; that it’s not always a happy ending, and that good guys don’t always win. It’s real out there!

BPM: How can readers discover more about you and your work?

FPB: You can learn more about me on my websites: FredericaBurden.com and also go on Facebook at Miami Beat: the Secret Society. I am looking forward to chatting with you all more and getting to know my ‘’Secret Society” followers.
