Safety At Greenland
Safety is always a top priority at school, which is why we practice safety drills and review safety plans. Some drills, like a fire drill, are very familiar. Some others, a medical alert, for example, may not be. The following are the drills we practice throughout the school year.
- Fire drills are practiced monthly. Staff and students follow the evacuation route out of the classroom when the alarm sounds.
- Tornado drills are practiced at least twice a year. Staff and students go to hallways.
- Medical Alert drills are practiced at least twice during the year. A team of school staff that have been trained in CPR and First Aid respond. This drill is practiced only by staff. Students do not participate.
- Emergency drills are practiced at least twice a year. (See Below for More Details)
ALICE is a federally endorsed safety protocol. The letters ALICE stand for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate:
● Alert – inform people of the threat, giving as much information as possible.
● Lockdown – Students and staff can choose to lockdown and barricade the room that they are in if they determine that it is not safe to evacuate.
● Inform – pass on as much information as possible to others and to First Responders, including calling 911.
● Counter – an effort of last resort, if an armed intruder is able to get into the space they are in, individuals can counter with distraction or other tactics. Staff are being trained to use every effort to stop the intruder, instead of relying on the traditional lockdown and hide response.
● Evacuate – If it is safe to do so, all are encouraged to evacuate the building, and remove themselves from the threat.
We often use the book, I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared. Below is a youtube link where you can view the book. https://youtu.be/o9fcClVEx7E
Finally, if you have not done so already, please take a moment and read the letter sent home by our Superintendent, Dr. Rindo.
