A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, DR. WILLIAMS
It takes a village
Growing up on the north side of Houston, I have always heard that it takes a village to raise a child. It was not until I worked with some youth from Upward Bound that I understood the meaning.
In a Frontier article by Reupert, Weimand, and Maybery, they explain that the phrase "it takes a village to raise a child" originates from an African proverb. The term conveys that it takes many people ("the village") to provide a safe, healthy environment for children, where they are given the security they need to develop and flourish and realize their hopes and dreams. This requires an environment where children's voices are taken seriously and multiple people (the "villagers"), including parents, siblings, extended family members, neighbors, teachers, professionals, community members, and policymakers, care for a child. Since arriving in Truitt, I have desired to build our relationship with our parents and community. I always tell people that we have a great group of students and staff members willing to go above and beyond. I am incredibly excited about the opportunities that our students are taking advantage of.
- We had 31 students compete in the regional Technology Student Association, and 20 have advanced to the state competition that will take place in Fort Worth, Texas, in April.
- We have our own Timberwolf Express News broadcasting studio.
- Our baseball team won their first game 8-2 on Saturday
- Our soccer teams will have their first games after spring break.
All the incredible things happening at Truitt Middle School prove nothing is impossible when "the Village" works together. I look forward to sharing more great things in future newsletters.
