Bus Dismissal and Hallway Transitions
Team,
As the school year progresses, the need for consistency of routines and procedures continues to be an extremely important factor to our instructional day. Maximizing instructional time and maintaining a safe environment is the responsibility of every team member.
After observing our current practices for hallway transitions and daily bus dismissals last week, I've come to the conclusion that we need to tweak our procedures. The noise levels in the halls during these times are at an all-time high. As shared with all teachers and paraprofessionals during meetings, there should never be a time when students are without adult supervision. Unfortunately, this has become a common practice that needs to change immediately.
As of Monday...
1. No classes will be sent to the hall during bus dismissal. All classes are to stay inside the classroom and be monitored by a teacher until their buses are called. When called, teachers are to stand by the door and monitor their transition in the hallway while those on bus duty stand in the hallway to also monitor.
- Teams can decide to rotate late days between teachers. At 4:30pm, teachers who are not on their late day rotation will walk their class to a late day teacher where they will sit and wait for their buses to be called.
- At no time can classes be put in the hallways.
2. Car Riders and Day Care Riders will no longer be called at 4:15pm. These students will stay in the classroom with their classes and will be called as their car/day care van arrives.
- At no time can they be put in the hallways or sent to the front office.
3. During transitions from homeroom to intervention and from intervention to homeroom, one adult MUST stay behind in the classroom to receive your children and one adult MUST walk the group, in a line, back to their homerooms.
- Groups of children will not be released and allowed to walk without an adult to their homerooms or to intervention groups.
- Children will not be dropped off and left outside of classrooms.
4. During all other transitions, children will be accompanied by an adult while walking in a line.
I truly do appreciate every person on our team. I am confident our program will set a new standard for excellence in RCSS. Like with anything, it takes time and practice to perfect procedures and to maintain expectations. Please continue to be a partner with me as we grow our students for excellence!
I want to extend a big THANK YOU to the teachers and staff who already practice these routines and procedures. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed!
Thank you for your flexibility and support,
Kristina
