40 BOOK CHALLENGE
Classroom teachers have shared the grade level expectations and all students are participating. For every 10 books read in the classroom, students receive a ticket that will be entered into a drawing for gift cards to local establishments. We will draw 15 "winners" each trimester, however all students are winners as they develop their reading skills and increase their literacy experiences with a variety of genres.
At the end of the year we will celebrate with all students who have completed the 40 Book Challenge! Thanks for your help and for your participation!

COLOR RUN 2019
Our 5th annual Color Run will take place on Friday, September 13th from 5PM - 7PM in the back field at Olson. Packets and collection envelopes were sent home with students the first week of school! You are welcome to attend and cheer on our runners, even if you didn't collect pledge money!
In order for a student to participate we ask that they collect at least $15 in pledge money. Immediate family members can join the students for FREE. They can purchase additional T-shirts and color packs if they would like to as it states on the order form. Teachers and staff are always welcome to join us and we welcome volunteers to help at a station or to help with encouraging runners or passing out supplies! Please contact our PTO members with any questions - adrienne.schefke@gmail.com ( PTO President)

WHAT IS DIFFERENTIATION?
What is differentiation? Imagine having a classroom of 26 students. Each student learns differently. Some students learn by seeing pictures, some learn by listening, and some learn by taking notes. In order to reach all students, a teacher must work to adjust his/her instruction to ensure each and every student is learning to their fullest potential. Teachers evaluate each lesson they are teaching to determine what they can do to the lesson to make sure each student has the best chance for success. When assigned a practice activity, some students need the page to have fewer choices and/or more space for writing. When doing a lesson, a teacher may choose to teach a lesson in 5 small groups rather than one whole group. Each year, teachers take a few weeks to learn how their students learn best and how to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of each and every student. Our teachers are evaluating their needs and how they learn! Your student’s work may look different than their friends…. That’s because the teacher used differentiation when assigning it!

ABSENCE, TARDIES, CHANGE OF DISMISSAL PLAN
PLEASE make sure to send a note or call (815-338-0473) to let us know of any change of plans. Without a note or call, your child will be sent home as per your "usual method of transportation" form.
BAND NOTES
Saturday, September 14th from 9-11:30am at Woodstock High School, in the South Street Entrance Hallway (just in front of the auditorium entrance)
AND
Monday, September 16th from 4-7:30pm at Creekside Middle School band room (enter the main CMS entrance and turn right, it is on the right side)
The meeting times are scheduled based on the times you selected most convenient for you on the registration form, to keep the line short and moving. If you didn't schedule an appointment , signed up late, wished you had signed up, or thought you didn't need one then realize you do- just show up! It is absolutely no problem.
I know that we have lots of very talented musicians at Olson, and can't wait to get started with our OWN instruments very soon. Please reach out with any questions you may have. I'd love the opportunity to work with your children.
