Our Monday Morning Faith Assembly
Blanket Exercise
Parents of EICS students are invited to take part in a Blanket Exercise to be held at St. Theresa Catholic School in Sherwood Park on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23 at 6:30 PM.
The Blanket Exercise is an active participation learning activity based on the major themes and findings of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The goal is to build understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Everyone is actively involved as they step onto blankets that represent the land, and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and later Métis peoples. By engaging on an emotional and intellectual level, the Blanket Exercise effectively educates and increases empathy.
Participants are asked to bring a blanket that can be placed on the floor and stepped on for this activity.
Please RSVP by Monday, October 22 by filling out the Google Form linked below.

We will also have Elder Theresa Strawberry join us at this event. She has spent the last year working in each of Elk Island's schools creating relationships and connections with students and staff.
If you have any questions, please email Crystal Cholin our Learning Services Consultant (crystalc@eics.ab.ca) or Sarah Congdon-Reitzel our Indigenous Lead at St. Theresa School (sarah.congdon@eics.ab.ca).
Power of Positivity
Last month we learned all about how to be an OLA Sleep Star. October is Read In Month and we are learning about the Power of Positivity. Last week we learned:
Starting out your day in a positive way is key to being healthy. Visualizing your perfect day can help make it a reality.
Be kind to others and they will be kind to you. Bring happiness to someone who needs it and you will find yourself sharing in their happiness. Happiness is contagious, so go spread some joy. Let’s sprinkle joy and kindness today.
Happiness is a choice. It doesn’t happen by accident. You decide every day whether you are going to be happy or grumpy. Thinking about all the great things in your life will encourage more positive thoughts and before you know it you’ll be in a better mood.
Remember the most effective and natural way to boost serotonin and endorphins is by exercising daily; so we jumped up bright and early and did some exercises together.
Taking part in meaningful activities can help keep your thoughts positive! Think about a favourite memory, one that stands out in your mind. Maybe it was an adventure with friends or a trip with your family where you tried something new. Remembering these “fill up” experiences can help keep your thoughts positive.
OLA's Halloween Celebrations
Classes will begin to organize for their class parties right after lunch recess, and get into their costumes. At 1:20 pm we will come together as an OLA community for a dance party and costume celebration until 1:50 pm. The students will then head outside for their recess as fresh air is important for their healthy growth, and return to celebrate in their classrooms.
Parents may be asked to help bring snacks for the in-class celebrations and we thank you in advance for honouring our AP 168: EICS Nutrition Policy by bringing healthy snacks for the celebrations. Candies brought to school will be respectfully returned home.
In need of some creative ideas for healthy treats? Over the next few weeks, we will include some ideas to help you on your way. Thank you in advance for your healthy contributions to in-class Halloween parties!

Thanks for dropping by this week!
The Fort Saskatchewan Public Library also stopped by this week to present the Young Reader's Choice Award nominees to our Grade 4's on Monday.
And . . . we were happy to see some members from our Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department on Friday, too!

Halloween Dance
Your OLA SC will be hosting a Family Halloween Dance from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Friday, October 26th. Come out with your family and invite another family to join you. Dance tickets are available for purchase on the hot lunch website.
There will be snacks for purchase at the dance so don't forget to bring some cash. As you may know we have a new nutrition policy, after much discussion we have decided the dance would be our only event to have "choose least often" options in the mix with our usual "choose most often" and "choose sometimes" options.
If you have any Halloween decor, especially blow up or stand up options you would let us borrow for the night, please contact Sam LeDrew at: samledrew@hotmail.com.
And, if you are able to help decorate on October 26th at 3:00 pm for about an hour, or volunteer a half hour of your time during the dance in the canteen, please send Sam an email.
Hot Lunch
Thank you to our Hot Lunch Committee for putting together two upcoming events:
- Boston Pizza on Wednesday, October 24th
- Booster Juice on Wednesday, November 7th
Ordering for these two dates is now closed.
Your committee will be putting together another selection of hot lunch choices for the coming weeks - stay posted.
Caring Corner
OLA will be going out to enjoy the outdoors in up to -25C (temperature and windchill). This means everyone needs to be properly dressed. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have all of the outerwear needed to handle the cold. We thought it might be nice if we could collect gently used or new winter wear for our school family who either can't afford it, or in situations where someone forgot their hat or mitts. These items will be kept in the office for anyone who needs them.
The office is also looking for some gently used clothing for when children need an emergency change of clothes. We are in most need of comfortable pants (like sweats) who can fit multiple sizes and long sleeved shirts.
Thank you.
Volunteers Needed
A HUGE thank you to everyone who handed in the volunteer forms already, your time commitment means we are able to provide more opportunities to all of the students in our school. We are still trying to fill the following positions:
- Yearbook Coordinator
- Spell-A-Thon Coordinator
- Classroom Representatives for 2Oi & 4E
Please let us know if your are interested in any of these roles. Thank you!
Fundraising
A big thank you to Terra Slaby! Terra has set up our school for the BP's Operation Education Fundraiser. Your OLA SC will get 5% back on all Boston Pizza receipts collected. Please tell all your friends and family to save their receipts from now until December 31st!
Keep your bottles and cans, we will be planning a bottle drive 2 times throughout the year. The dates will be discussed at our next SC meeting in November. The first date will likely be right after Christmas break and the second in late May.
Have a fundraising idea for our spring fundraiser? Come to our November 22nd meeting with the details! If you are unable to attend feel free to email us.
From your Executive
From now on you will notice instead of PSC or Parent School Council you will see and hear SC or School Council. The council is still the same, just a change of name :)
We have been so happy to see so many faces at our meetings thus far, and we are always happy to see new faces, and hear from new people as well. If you ever have any questions, concerns or ideas we are here for you.
