Third Grade: Third graders have just completed work on conflict resolution/problem solving, and are starting personal safety lessons.
Fourth Grade: Fourth grade is working on conflict resolution/problem solving. This will lead directly into our anti-bullying curriculum, Steps to Respect.
Fifth Grade: The fifth grade classes are just beginning to look at personal safety lessons. They will soon be starting work on Steps to Respect, our district anti-bullying curriculum.
Sixth Grade: Sixth grade classes are all working on a unit on substance abuse at this time. Units to be completed before the end of the year are autism, personal safety, and cyber bullying.
4th Grade: We recently had the violin kit at Garner. The students got to hold the bow and violin and learn how to play the D and A strings. We also learned how to play pizzicato. The students continue to make progress with Recorder Karate! Many students have now earned five of the nine “belts”. We hope to have several more black belts by the end of the school year! We also continue to learn more complex rhythms such as two sixteenths - eighth (ti-ka-ti) and eighth - two sixteenth (ti-ti-ka)
5th Grade: We had the drum kit at Garner after winter break and the students played many rhythms and songs on tubanos, shakers and cowbells. After the drums, we played our class set of ukuleles. We learned 4 chords C, F, G, and G7 and 2 new songs: “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley and “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King.
6th Grade: We just finished playing our class set of ukuleles for two weeks. We have learned 4 chords: C, F, G and G7. We learned 2 songs: Three Little Birds by Bob Marley and Stand by Me by Ben E. King. We are now getting ready to study the blues. We will look at the history and musicians such as Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles and B.B. King and their contribution to this amazing genre of music. We will even be creating our own blues song!
4th Grade:4th grade students come to P.E. class to gain knowledge of new activities and to try their best. Since last conferences, our units have included volleyball and striking skills, basketball dribbling and shooting skills, tumbling, climbing wall, jump ropes and floor hockey. Future units include: tennis, bowling, parachute activities, water safety, track and field and outdoor leisure activities. Kindness, cooperation, respect, and teamwork are emphasized and reinforced daily.
