Newsletter
From the Principal
Kia Ora e te Whanau,
This week has been a whirlwind with the changes taking effect.
Distance Learning for Tuesdays and Tutor Group Time at the beginning of the day. I am just going to reiterate the messages I said this week to our students.
Tutor Group Time at the beginning of the day is a time for students to review their day at school. A time to check timetables, check uniform, follow up on lateness and attendance and a check to see how they are including what their learning looks like for that day.
I encourage parents to check the parental portal to review their achievement to date.
Key Questions to ask:
How are you doing?
Tell me what is happening with your learning?
What assessments are coming up and are you on track to achieve these, if No why? And how or what can be done.
Connect with the teachers if need be. We are here to help.
Tuesday Distance Learning:
This day is an opportunity for students to lead their own learning. The messages we shared are:
- Plan Your Day: Check Google Classroom and your student email. If students cannot access a device and or internet pack, learning materials have been provided by the teachers as well. These tasks are expected to be completed. Keep to your timetable and work to it. Keep track of your learning.
- Connect: Teachers are here to Help! Reach out via email and Google Classroom if you need help, and/or follow up the next day in person.
- Time expectations: Utilise this time effectively! Follow your school timetable. If you complete your tasks, utilise this time to: work through careers central, study for external assessments, exercise, read a book or take time off your devices.
- Excellence!!! Achieving excellence in practice! Do your best and strive to be better than before! It has been great to see our students wear their correct school uniform with pride, A sign of ‘excellence.’ Thank you parents and families for your support.
Continue to push for excellence and together we will be excellent.
Through the Lens of Our Student Leaders
Building great leaders is incredibly important at Rosehill College and I can see it is a part of the schools’ DNA. By nurturing student leadership skills, Rosehill College prepares young people for the future, boosting confidence, developing critical thinking and collaboration capabilities, and growing community-spirited global citizens who genuinely care about the world around them.
I am wanting our community to be able to identify our leaders and get to know who they are. It is important for future leaders to be inspired by our current leaders. Every fortnight our student leaders will be contributing to our school newsletters - a view from their lens. Watch this space!

We are trying to communicate with students through their school email. Information about elections, workshops and course selection has already been sent to students. Please check school emails regulary.
NCEA & Study Information Evening
NCEA Changes 2022
These changes are in response to the impact of disrupted teaching and learning which has occurred this year.
Students should regard these as bonuses and not use them to aim for minimum achievement.
- Learning Recognition Credits
1 credit given for every 5 gained to a maximum of 10 Level 1 and 8 Levels 2 and 3.
These are used before final results are sent out in January 2023 only if a student is within 8 or 10 credits of passing. - Certificate Endorsement - 46 credits at Merit and Excellence; not 50.
- University Entrance - 14 credits in each of two approved subjects and 12 credits in the third approved subject.
- Externally Assessed Portfolios Submission Dates - moved back 1 week for Technology, DVC and Scholarship Dance, Music and Health and Phys. Ed. Visual Arts and Digital Technology submission dates remain the same.
Kai and resources provided.

Engagement Reports - Distance Learning Tuesday
Engagement reports are changing this week. To support whānau and to encourage ākonga to continue to aim for excellence, we are focused our judgements on distance learning attempted on the Tuesday rather than the week. This is similar to the criteria we used last year while we needed to isolate at home.
- Red = Cause for concern.
This is because there is no evidence of ākonga engaging in any of the work set for distance learning in this subject on the most recent Tuesday. - Orange = Room for improvement
Teachers have received some evidence of ākonga engaging in some of the work set for the distance learning in this subject on the most recent Tuesday. - Green = Engaged
Teachers have received the all of the expected evidence set for the distance learning in this subject on the most recent Tuesday. - Black (No Class) - No Class on Tuesday (this includes period 1 and Tutor)
There was no class on that day due the timetable cycle Tuesday was on for this ākonga* - Empty - No entry as this Teacher was absent due to illness.
For our more practical subjects where a task at home would be less appropriate or more difficult to measure engagement, our kaiako are going to use the other days during the week to ensure whānau are still getting some idea of the engagement being made during the week.
For senior ākonga, they will also start seeing their key NCEA achievement data along the top of their engagement report as we move closer towards the end of this year. A key number to keep an eye on is the internal success rate. This is the percentage of assessments students have achieved so far this year from the assessments they have attempted.

Recap: Year 8 Student and Parent Open Evening
Thank you to everyone who helped support our Year 8 Open Evening on Thursday 4th August. It was wonderful to see so many whānau and future Year 9 students on site to see some of the learning opportunities here at Rosehill College.
Just a reminder, our In-Zone enrolments close next Friday 19 August, so please make sure these are in as soon as possible.
Recap: Careers, Options & NCEA Evening
This year’s Careers Evening was held on Monday night and was a huge success with a great variety of exhibitors giving students and parents the opportunity to discuss future pathways whether for further study, an apprenticeship or into full time employment. At Rosehill College we are very fortunate to have the support of our providers in helping our students navigate their way through to their future career.
We would like to thank Domino’s Papakura for their support in donating pizzas to the exhibitors and staff prior to the evening commencing.
Recap: Spoken Word Poetry By Sheldon Rua - Action Education
This week at the Principal's Assemblies we were treated with some spoken word poetry from Sheldon Rua, a poet, musician, dancer and tutor at Action Education. Some of our own poets, Zellas and DJ performed their poems to appreciative audiences, clicking in agreement with what they were saying. Some students have signed up for the workshops coming up. Action Education coaches and tutors will be coming to hold lunchtime workshops for those who have signed up and for our already experienced poets.
If you think that this is something that you would be interested in trying, please see Zellas Uatisone, Mrs Falepeau or Ms Simmons. Be quick as these will be happening soon.
Recap: Tongariro - Through my lens program - Media Studies
Week 9 of Term 2 saw 10 students from the Year 13 Media Studies program head off to Tongariro for the 'Through my Lens' program.
This is the second year this program has run and was kindly sponsored by ICEBREAKER. Hillary Outdoors put on an amazing program for our 13MED students - our first day involved a stream walk - hiking through dense bush, wading through streams, and climbing up waterfalls. Students were set up with GO-PROs to capture the experience and collect footage for their documentaries.
Day 2 was a trip to the snow - for some students this was their first time seeing, touching, and throwing snow!
Day 3 and 4 were our expedition days - a day in the caves, scrambling through amazing cave systems and looking for glow worms, and our overnight trip where we slept amongst the stars.
The purpose of this trip is to get students out into the great outdoors and to realise that learning can happen everywhere - not just in the classroom. Students brought all of their footage to school to edit together for a 4 and 6-credit production.
CHECK OUT our Instagram page for some snippets of the trip and future updates on what we do in Media Studies.
Recap: Year 13 Biology Zoo Trip
On Wednesday, the Year 13 Biology classes had a long awaited trip to Auckland Zoo to supplement their learning for the Human Evolution and Speciation standards.
Each class had a hands on experience looking at skeletons, skulls and tool cultures associated with various hominid species and earlier groups.
This was followed by a chance to observe various monkey and primate groups in the zoo along with seeing actual examples of New Zealand species that will help students relate to the Speciation standard

Tautoko te rā daffodil - Friday 26th August 2022
Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer.
Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 30 years New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and we need your help again this year.
Whether it's driving someone to their treatment, providing advice to someone who has rung our 0800 number, or sitting with them during their treatment - the Cancer Society is there. But we can't do this without your help.
Every dollar raised for Daffodil Day will go towards cancer care for patients and their whānau, education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research.
