Boys Track & Field
The Southport Trackmen finished 3rd in the Southport Sectional last Thursday, moving up one spot from a year ago. Junior Michael Crook was a double-winner, taking first in the 1600m run and 3200m run. He will opt out of the 1600m run for the rest of the season and focus on making a run at State in the 3200m run. Senior Brock Layne won the 300m intermediate hurdles, running a personal best time; he was also the runner-up in the 110m high hurdles. He will compete in both at the North Central Regional on Thursday, and he has a legitimate shot to qualify for State in both.
Other Southport Trackmen moving onto the Regional:
Andrew Mappes in the 200m dash
Drew Shellenberger in the 3200m run
4x100m relay of Mappes, Layne, Gabe Collins-Green, & Devon Sledge
4x400m relay of Layne, Mappes, Dominick Farino, & Luke Manning
4x800m relay of Crook, Manning, Scott Speiser, & Max Garrett
At the North central regional, Andrew Mappes advanced to the state meet in the 200 meter run.
Girls Track & Field
Erin Sullivan won the 800 meter run at the regional and Lexie Green won the 3200 meter run. Both girls will advance to state at Indiana University on June 3rd.
The team had their best 18 hole match at the conference tournament with a score of 355. They were 25 strokes better than last year. Leading the team at conference were juniors Davis Chan with an 83 and Luke Manning an 84.
They will round out May with three 18 hole matches leading up to their June 5th sectional.
The weather did not cooperate for the scheduled meets. These were scheduled and rescheduled several times.
In the Conference Indiana meet at Franklin Central High School, the Cardinals represented SHS well. All of the athletes and partners competed hard.
The sectional was also held at Franklin Central High School.

The regional championship was the 9th overall in the 24 year history of Southport Boys Volleyball and advanced the team to the State Championship round.
The 8 regional winners all advanced to play on Friday, May 19 in the Southport Fieldhouse in the state quarterfinals. The #9 Cardinals played #1 Carmel in their state quarterfinal match.
A very successful 2017 season ended on Friday for the Boys Volleyball Team with a state quarterfinal loss to eventual state champions, #1 Carmel. The Cardinals pushed the best team in the state to the limit in the first set, leading at several points, but just couldn't get the winning point in several crucial set points, and eventually lost 29-27. The cards fought hard but also lost the next two sets, to lose the match 3-0.
The varsity Cardinals finish the season at 23-15, with their 9th regional championship in program history. Junior Londyn Givens earned his first All-State nomination, and senior 4-year varsity player Lane Skutt earned his third consecutive All-State nomination.
