The Hoagie Sandwich
Philadelphia known as Hog Island, which was home to a shipyard during World War I (1914-1918). The Italian immigrants working there would bring giant sandwiches made with cold cuts, spices, oil, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and peppers for their lunches. These workers were nicknamed “hoggies.” Over the years, the name was attached to the sandwiches, but under a different spelling.

The Invention of the Italian ice
Italian Ice originally came from Italy but made its way over to the United States and it is known as water icey in Philadelphia and the Delaware valley. Rita's Italian Ice is one of the most popular places to get Italian ice in Philadelphia and there are over 600 locations in the United States. Rita's Italian ice was founded by Bob Tumolo with a recipe that he purchased from an elderly neighbor that he then adjusted to enhance the flavors and include real fruit.
Other foods
Funnel cake, associated with the Pennslyvania Dutch,made by pouring batter into hot cooking oil in a circular pattern and deep frying the overlapping mass until golden-brown.
Tomato Pie
Essentially a cheeseless pizza two feet by three feet in size, with extra oregano. Tomato pie is normally served cold or at room temperature. It is more often found in the Northeast section of Philadelphia
Scrapple
A processed meat loaf made of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal and flour, is perhaps the most iconic of Pennsylvanian breakfast foods.
Cheese Sauce
A gooey, orange, dairy condiment carried by many street vendors. In general, Philadelphians often add cheese sauce to inexpensive food items, such as French fries and pretzels.

Philadelphia is the largest city of the U.S state Pennsylvania and the fifth most popular city in the U.S. In 1682, William Penn the city to serve as capital of the Pennsylvania colony. By the 1790's Philadelphia had surpassed Boston to become the largest city and busiest port in British America. The population of Pennsylvania is 12 million and the largest city Philadelphia has a population of 1.553 million. The Independence National Historical Park is one of the most visited places in Philadelphia by tourists, others are Liberty Bell Pavilion, the Independence Hall, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
